Wow. Very interesting post, tadw. I'm sympathetic to developers who are being ripped-off by pirated software and sharing codes, but this is a little too much. I'm not so confident that this couldn't be triggered by an unintended cause, which really would be unfair to those of us who paid for the program.
I noticed that Anton posted a very curt post on this thread (since modified/edited) which responded to the reports of the hard reset with something like "I will not tolerate software piracy."
I don't blame him for being upset and for trying to stop the problem, but I definitely don't agree with this method and I think I'll probably spend my money elsewhere in the future.
Well, the Antonīs reaction means only one thing, developers are getting tired of dealing with piracy and with the that fact that laws canīt protect us against this problem.
No matter what we do after a few weeks of releasing any version of our programs you can find warez copies, cracked in Chinese web sites or Arabic Web sites. And you donīt have where to go, where to claim.
I don't understand why people that use legal copies are making such a big deal of this. Anton's code will affect those who use an ilegal information. That's all. And like I said before in another forum, Anton is not the only one taking the justice in his own hands.
Nobody know how much cost us in time and money when we have to do what I did with the latest version of my program, to change a registration procedure and reissue 1000s of keys to current customers.

Aren't you just a cyber vigilante!! This guy is an eye for an eye kinda guy.
I never used your "tweaks" prog, and now definitely never will. I will also recommend that others dont.

Enjoy your time in courts.
frost, believe me I wont miss your 10 dollars. And BTW if you want other not to buy my programs you need more than a few words over here. You have to delete hundreds and hundreds of pages of me helping others thatīs what really count. So far, your words donīt seem to me of any help neither to this community either developers to find a better solution than what Anton have done.
well, you can miss it or not - you're not getting it either way. Not only that! I just might go and download a cracked copy! AND if you keep talking that way, i just might upload it to the "international ring of warez distributors" LOL ;)
Hey no offense, I just hate this eye-for-an-eye mentality. As you can see you are the minority anyway.
Oh and as far as a solution for developers - I alredy offered one (as did others). Make it unsuable through either an uninstall or some garbage message popping up.

well, looking to what happened to that other guy who used the illegal key that does not sound as a good idea to me ;)
Well, the more I think about this the more annoyed I get. I don't need to the hassle of worrying about some unexpected hard-reset due to some accident or conflict or something else. I just uninstalled my purchased copy of PM and don't intend to reinstall until Anton changes this "feature."
I have no problem with other less-drastic methods of protecting one's hard work, but this crosses the line in my opinion, especially since there didn't seem to be any sort of warning about a possible hard reset.
I can see both sides but I really don't know why the whole PDA should be hard reset. He should only be worried about his own software and not shutting down a whole PDA.
BTW, i posted to Tomov's web forum with links to this and other forums discussing this new "feature". The man deleted it and canceled my user id.
What a hyppocrite. No freedom of speech for the old country anymore. Viva Putin!

I WAS considering Pocket Mechanic until I read TADW's post.
NO WAY! I'll never even consider owning anything by this developer. I have purchased everything I own and support developers fully, but this is down right rude. Excellent solutions are offered here too!
I just am not a programmer and wouldn't even know how to check for this insanity in a program. I love informative threads like this!
Thanks TADW

I have to say a few more things. The reason why Iīm defending Anton is because I have been on that boat and I know that there is noone to defend you, there is nothing that you can do. And because I know that "Everyone has wanted to punch out someone who wronged them".
I can tell you that Anton eventually will remove the hard reset trap from his program and replace it for a different none destructive method. No because the preasure that you guys are trying to put on him (what are just two page in this forum and 3 guys saying that they wont buy ;)) but "because it's not worth it in the long run"
He currently understand that there are other ways to be more effective teaching a lesson and that that effectiveness can by multiplied by many times if many of us developers join together againt this "cancer"
Thatīs all I have to say, and I know that Anton is reading my comments so Anton, I hope you donīt mind if I took the liberty of saying what I just said.
