Mad "1 unresolved item," ARRRRRGGGGHHHH!

A few days ago I purchased and installed a "Megathemes" pack from Handango, very nice nature-oriented Today themes. I followed the installation instrux, copying the .tsk files into my My Documents folder on the Axim. But ever since then, every time I sync, it tells me I have "1 unresolved item." When I click on "Resolve items," I get this little pop-up window:

<<Synchronization cannot be completed because a file cannot be synchronized with your mobile device. Close all programs on your mobile device and this computer, and synchronize again.>>

I've tried everything I can think of: Of course I've closed everything on my desktop machine (nothing was open on the Ax) and tried again; I've recopied all those .tsk files into the Ax's My Documents folder; I've tried all three sync rules (about which way to replace items or leave them unresolved); I've tried someone's suggestion in this thread about deselecting "Files" in the sync options and then reselecting it; and I've tried both a soft reset of the Ax and a reboot of my desktop PC, several times. Nothing has worked!

Not that it's a huge problem, but it's terribly annoying to have that little red exclamation mark on my green sync icon and not be able to make it go away. Any suggestions?

(And btw, why do I remember with my Jornada being shown the file that was conflicting and asked which way I wanted to resolve it? Was that an earlier version of ActiveSync? Grrrrrrrr...)

I just posted about this a day or so ago,

I had to goto "Tools" - "Options" - "Rules"

And in there is a setting that most likely is
set to "Leave items unresolved" .. just switch
it to desktop overwrites pda or pda overwrites
desktop... and your items will be resolved...

It might be a pain, but if you rename the files on the Axim, like adding a 1 to the file names ... either the files will sync up, or the offending one will become evident.

I tried this ... all three ways (desktop overwrites PDA, PDA overwrites desktop, and leave unresolved). None of the three choices worked.

You mean rename them on the Axim itself, not in the Pocket_PC_My_Documents folder on my desktop machine, right?

Right. This will time-stamp the files as recently modified, making them the ones to be copied. If you modify a file on the Axim, the duplicate on the PC will be updated to match.
Usually an unresloved item is one that has been changed on both platforms between syncing. This move will force the issue ... I think. If some file still refuses to sync, you can at least tell which one it is because the corresponding file on the PC will not have been renamed after sync.
It seems relatively harmless to tweak the names of theme files.

I tried your suggestion, and unfortunately it didn't work. Then I actually cut everything from the Ax's My Documents folder and stored it in a temp folder on my desktop machine, and added things back one by one, and I still get the same "1 item unresolved" message. So now I'm convinced it's an ActiveSync problem.

I tried reinstalling ActiveSync, but that didn't work either. Would you suggest I upgrade to AS 3.6 from the MS site? I read somewhere on these boards that it's not a good idea to install the upgrade until Dell offers it on their site, but honestly I don't know what else to do!

Well, this should be my biggest problem, I suppose... at least everything seems to work correctly. (Now, if only I could ignore that doggone little red exclamation point... )

Thanks anyway. I'm open to any and all further suggestions.

I use AS 3.6, not saying it will work fine
for everyone, but I used to have the
syncronized files problem too.. with
my favorites folder and files folder...

But its your best bet after you've tried
everything else, also If it doesnt work
you can un-install AS 3.6 and put the
one from Dells CD back on....

When you reinstalled Active Sync, did you have to create a new partnership? And that didn't fix it??

That might mean it's something in Outlook that can't be transferred to the Axim properly. Try temporarily eliminating some of the Outlook sync options.

No, it didn't ask me to create a new partnership.

I'll try fiddling with the Outlook sync options tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.

If I can't fix this glitch any other way, maybe I'll give 3.6 a try. Can't hurt, I suppose.

It solved your synching problem?

I had a similar problem the other day that was caused by AXIM notes templates that were synced to notes in Outlook Desktop that were too large to sync back to the AX. I just deleted them from Outlook notes and problem deleted as well.

Good luck

Let's return to the scene of the crime

One of the first things I always want to know when troubleshooting is "What's changed?"

You indicated that this problem first popped up after installing "Megathemes" (change), so if you haven't already, I would suggest uninstalling that app.

1. After uninstalling Megathemes, test your synchronization to see if you still get the error.

2. If you don't get the error, you can reinstall a freshly downloaded copy of Megathemes (in case the original download is corrupted), and then see if the error returns.

3. If the error does return, and you know that lots of other PPC owners use this app without experiencing this issue, then we can begin to focus our troubleshooting on the Axim. (perhaps other users are experiencing similar issues with Megathemes???)

4. If you're still getting the error after reinstalling a freshly downloaded copy of Megathemes, I would suggest deleting the Activesync partnership on your PC, and create a new partnership.

I was persistently getting a slightly different error message - "1 item not synchronized", and had to finally delete and recreate my partnership to resolve the issue.

Hope this helps,

Scott

Cat,

I think Scott is right. I seem to remember some weird syncing issues after installing MS Theme Generator. The new themes were always in my "Add/Remove Programs" list and kept trying to constantly sync them. I moved the new themes to my CF card, deleted them from the "Add/Remove Programs" list and problem went away.

Aha, theme files can be moved elsewhere?

I stored all my theme files in the Ax's main memory, but your post indicates that I could move them to the My Documents folder on my SD card, yes? That might be something to try.

And then of course I can also try what Scott suggested. Thanks -- I'll keep you posted. ;)
