What is the best file format and method to sync a Textmaker doc on the x50v with Word 2000 on a desktop?

I guess the best method to sync is the usual -- drop it into the my documents. That way, changes are saved whether they were made on the handheld or the PC.

Also, Textmaker has an option in its settings to read, create, save, etc. in the native Word format or in the Textmaker format. I set mine to do everything in Word format. In the pop-up menu, choose Extras, Preferences, then arrow over to the Files tab. There is a drop-down for "Default file format," where you can choose MS Word.
