there's a new beta version of MortButtons.
You can download it here, a documentation for V1.0 can be found here (the concept didn't change, so it's still a good information...)
The changes:
Arbitrary number of entries per menu (multiple pages)
Supports landscape and VGA If you're using SE_VGA or similar, please write me whether it works fine! In theory, it should display smaller entries, but I'm not sure if the icon handling works as expected...
Supports own skins (documentation will follow later on, you can try to modify the contained one...)
Empty background can be omitted (window is only as big as necessary)
Some new actions, like creating new documents (all "New" menu entries, WM2003 required) or rotation (WM2003 SE required)
Create own submenus
Re-arranged tree of possible files/actions
Use MortButtons to browse directories (assign a directory to a button, when chosen, it will open the directory contents as MortButtons menu)
Fixed some troubles with links (like start menu entries), e.g. contained parameters are used, and more icons are shown correct
Some minor bugfixes and interface changes...
Multi language support.
If you want to do an own translation, select "Deutsch" (German) during setup, so a German "language.dat" is created (English uses internal values). Now translate everything after quotation marks (it's a simple text file), and send it to me (or simply attach it to a reply)... There's a short element name in English in front of the "="s, which should help a bit...
Changes:
- Submenus weren't saved (missed to create the directory... )
- Added setting dialogs (activation, display, hide list) directly to setup menu
- Fixed some smaller errors with the installer (like overwriting gx.dll)
Changes:
- Bugfix: Rotation activated timeout
- Bugfix: Problems with skins using screen width for elements
- Removed "General Settings" dialog (remained only for compatibity reasons anyway), now shows setup menu
- "Align" option for Skins
- Small modifications to some graphics (esp. VGA)
- New skin
Oh, btw: I'm thinking about a name change.
It would be nice if you could vote here.
(If you've got problems with registration or don't like to do it, just reply here...)
I tried b14 on my X50v in true vga mode (ozVGA). Not sure why, but my ppc was significantly slower with MortButtons installed. I eventually removed it.

Strange... During it's shown only a timer works (for the timeout), in background it just checks the message queue, which usually takes almost no CPU time at all...
Edit: Just checked it with RhinoStats. I had no noticable difference with MortButtons running (with 2%-6%, without 1%-6%).
Does anybody else have this problem? Maybe it's a conflict with some other software?

Sorry, but I don't speak German(?). Not sure what is says at your site!
A few questions:
1) I d/l & installed yesterday, so it's not the latest I guess. Whenever I use a hardware button it first brings me to a MortButton screen, hesitates, then performs the action. Is this a necessary step?
2) Doesn't matter where it's installed, I imagine, as it installs into the Windows directory, correct?
OK, I had gotten 1.0 yesterday. So I uninstalled and then installed your latest beta 14. It workes only intermittently. I set up on my Buttons menu for buttons 1-4 to correspond with MortButtons 1-4. I set 3 applications for #1, 3 apps for #2, 1 app for #3, and 1 app for #4. #1 and 2 are retaining the selections I made OK, but #3 and 4 are not. They stop working the second or third time I use them and when I look in the MB settings, no apps are assigned to those keys. What's happening here? Also, the setup is confusing. No real direction to it. And the documentation for 1.0 is not clear to me. What is "MortTasks"? I'd really like to like this application, but it needs to be clearer.

If you're using only one app for a button, it's better to assign it directly. Otherwise all that MortButtons would do is showing a menu with one entry and thus delaying the start of that application.

Strange... Maybe there's a bug there. It's not too common that there's only one app per button...

The principle is quite easy. First of all, you should realize MortButtons is NOT a button manager like VITO or PowerButton (that's why I think about renaming). It's just a menu tool that's optimized for button usage, since it allows to select an entry with multiple presses of an application button (and timeout).
You've got five menus available which you can assign to your application buttons (you can also assing the menu "MortButton1" to the 5th button if you want to...).
Btw, you can lauch the MortButtons menus with any button manager (like VITO), too.

What is "MortTasks"?
It's a special menu, listing all currently running programs. I.e. if assigned to a button, it allows something like Alt-Tab in Windows.
OK, there's really been a bug if there was only one entry in the menu...
I fixed that, and added a selectable DPad handling (in "Activation"). The old one was made for single column views, while there can be multiple with the new skins. The first two possibilities seem to be the same (left/right vs. prev./next entry), but they differ if the items are shown column-wise, like in the landscape view of the default skin.
To install the attached skins, unzip them and copy the contained folder to the Skins subdirectory of the MortButtons directory on your device (e.g. Mobile device\Program files\Mort's MortButtons).
For all those who want to do a localization I've attached an English language file. Just translate everything after the equal sign with any editor (like Notepad), and send the translation either to mort@sto-helit.de or post it as reply.
If you want to test it, rename the file to language.dat, copy it to the MortButtons folder on your device, and restart MortButtons (if "stay in memory" is checked, close it with the door icon in the toolbar).
The updated page for V2.0 is ready so far. It also contains manuals (usage and own skins), FAQ, etc.
The download version is mostly similar to b16. I tried some things I had to remove later, so there shouldn't be any noticable difference. If there is though, please tell me.
The URL is only temporary until it's released (which I plan to do end of this week).
Is this still avaliable for download? I got version 1.0 but i wanted to get the newer one. None of the links here work.
thanks.
