Have you heard about the free Bible program for PC and Pocket PC called e-Sword? It is awesome in the PC version. I am about to buy an X50v and put it on it. My brother takes his Pocket PC to church and uses it in place of a print Bible, plus he has a whole Bible library on it too (SD card). It has commentaries, dictionaries, and several different Bibles in different languages. Go to www.e-Sword.net to download it. You will be amazed.

Pete,
I use e-Sword on my laptop system but I found the PocketPC version to be pretty slow. .Net is overkill on a program of this type, IMHO.
I'm using the OliveTree Bible reader which works pretty well also. You can find it at www.olivetree.com
I haven't used the Pocket e-Sword, yet, but it should work fast. You could contact the guy that wrote it: Rick Meyers, rick@e-sword.net. You did put all the modules on the SD card, right?

I use the Olivetree--bible reader. I tried e-sword and found it was about the same as the bible reader. I had trouble removing e-sword. It would not delete all the files and I finally had to do a hard reset to clear it. Has anyone else had a problem uninstalling it?
Try this one. It is from a guy who wrote it to be fast and simple. It's not the loaded stuff you may want, but it works. It's fast, but you do have to keep bibles in main memory. The beauty is that it is not only free, but you can make any bible compatible with it, by just making a folder with a name and formatting the .txt files the same way.
Go to the website, and along the links bar, look for PDA Bible and click it...
I agree with your sig, daniel. I love it whenh I see other chrisitians on these forums! I have found e-sword to be the only Catholic one out there so far. I have not tried many, but I know that Catholic ones aren't that popular.

Please forgive my ignorance, but which version is the Catholic one? I remember reading somewhere that it has a few books of the Bible that the KJV doesn't have.

Now I am confused. I use E-Sword and I'm not Catholic. E-Sword itself is just a shell/reader program. Then you download whichever versions of the bible you want. You can have up to four different bibles, commentaries and the like. I like it and don't find it very slow and it installs to my CF card along with all its resources. I especially like being able to look up a verse in 4 different translations and then compare that against what one of the guides/commentaries says about it. Haven't tried any other programs, but esword works well.

Rice Lover, correct me if I'm wrong, but the Catholic Bible has a few additional books that other translations don't. I don't think there are any left out though are there?
I love the fact that there are free Bible resources out, but the version I use most is the NIV, and I haven't found a free edition of it yet. I did notice that someone just put out an NIV study Bible on SD not too long ago. :approve:
What they mean by a Catholic Bible is a Bible that contains the Apocrypha...a set of writings that were considered to be "spurious" and questioned over the years. Although certain Popes condemned these books (namely Leo the Great and Benedict XIV) these books continued to be important to the church and to church authors, especially in the middle ages. The modern evangelical movement does not recognize the aunthenticity of these books; and even for Catholics (Eastern and Western) the books are questionable.
The main concern is that you have the core 66 books of both the New and Old Testament, in a translation that is somewhat true to the Original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic texts.
I've settled on Olive Tree, because they now offer the NIV (not that the NIV is the most scholarly version by any means, but it is one of the most readable and still adheres rather closely to the original languages). Olive Tree is NOT a "beautiful" program, but it is fast, and I like how the index is laid out.
I did NOT like Laridian at all. It was slow, and FUZZY on my X50v (which isn't in VGA mode!).
With all Bibles, it usually doesn't matter what version you read, as long as you read it, think on what you read, make connections between what you read and your own life, and then apply that knowledge into action in your life.
I would reiterate what was said about the NIV from Laridian. The font is FUZZY. From their FAQ:
"Laridian Pocket PC products are compatible with Windows Mobile 2003 and the VGA display mode.
However, while in the VGA mode, the text may be somewhat fuzzy. A future revision of PocketBible will provide full support. We cannot offer a specific time frame."
On the x50v, it is only fuzzy in the QVGA mode. If I run SE_VGA, it is nice & sharp. This seems contrary to what the FAQ says.

you won't find a free version because it is still owned and not public domain. sure this is a pain cause no one wants to pay for a bible, but the people who own it have to make money some how. I use the ESV because it is free and a very nice translation.
oh, a note about how to uninstall e-sword. It complains about the fonts being installed. to fix this problem use ActiveSynce to delete the specefied fonts and then do the uninstall and it will work fine.

I have Pocket e-Sword and have 15 Bibles, 4 commentaries, and 5 dictionaries installed in it. I was not aware of any limitations in the number of Bibles and other materials. I have everything stored on my SD card and it runs fine. The program isn't slow once it is started, just a little slow starting up.
I also have OliveTree Bible reader, which I like very much. I have it loaded with several Bible's and reference materials as well.
You can find links to download both of these great Bible programs in my View MyPDA.
This is my first post on Aximsite. I have been lurking around reading info and stuff. Well, I am a big fan of e-sword. They keep updating their libraries so that they don't have any mistakes in the works that they provide. I have found that it is slow at start up but once you in it is as smooth as glass. I used Olive Tree for a while, but it wasn't as user friendly as e-sword in my opinion.
