ListPro test ?
Erika Heumann's review of Ilium's ListPro was enthusiastic (thanks Erika) but how big of a list can it practically handle?
I tested my Axim's Excel with one of the files at this site:
http://www.hometheaterinfo.com/dvdlist.htm
The one in the upper right, full list of all DVDs including pre-releases, is essentially a list (no "computations"). It has, as I recall, something over 26,000 records (a cool list if you're into DVDs). It totally bogged down my Ax but it did load and open. (I've been meaning to go back and try it again with more memory directed toward processing, I had it just in the middle, default, just haven't had a chance.)
Anyone want to try it on ListPro???
Bruce

I'm game. ;)
I'm downloading the comma-separated file now, and will let you know what I find.

I've done only a limited amount of file importing in the past, so bear with me. ;) The quotes are causing some confusion on the import, so I'm looking at the other formats. It did read in the first field, all 27,000 times without too much effort.

I'm still having trouble with the format of the file, so I'll need to look at this later. I'm sure this is just my inexperience with the process, and not an issue of ListPro's ability to handle the file.
Yes, what I'm doing is unzipping the file on the PC, bringing it into Excel, and then saving it as a tab-delimited text file. No luck so far, but I'll let you know. I'm going to try the conversion work on the PC, and then bring over a working list file to the axim, just to see if it can handle something that large.

thanks, sure you're curious too
Erika
Thanks. I'm sure you're curious too. After my first experiment I paniced. Opening the file in Excel slowed the Ax down soooo much my commands were getting muddled and I was hoping I wouldn't have to do something drastic. It took over 2 minutes to actually open the excel file - - but it did open it!!

Yes, this would be interesting to know. Hard to watch you bring your axim to its knees, hmm?
I think the problem I'm having is merely in the formating of the import file (never an effortless task), but I've done this before.
I hope to get somewhere with this later today. A very good test!

Bruce, I'm running into my own inexperience with a file this big. I've shot an email off to Ilium, I'll post when I have more information.
Perhaps someone else will notice the thread, and know more about importing huge data files. I'd just like a really large one which could be read from both Excel and ListPro, so we could benchmark the two.

Heard from Ilium that they are working with this file, I'll post when I have more information.

The file is definitely stretching ListPro's abilities. One of their techs has gotten the file into their software, but I haven't gotten my mitts on it yet. When I do, I'll post the axim's response to a file that large in ListPro.
Sorry for the long delay.
I'd say for now, if you're in to toting large lists like that one, excel remains a possibility...so long as you don't want to really do anything with it. :D I'll expect the same behavior if/when I get the ListPro file on the Dell.

I did a comparison review of 6 different "list" programs for posting on this website. It should show up in the near future. I found ListPro hard to use, and rated it near the bottom of the list. It did however have some features that the other programs did not have.
Prior to the review actually coming out, I found ListTree, NoteTree, and PocketList to be better programs. (I don't think I would attempt to use a program of this type with a 26,000 record file though.)
Something more oriented to a flat-file database might be better for a DVD list.

I am very interested in seeing this review!
Have you already submitted it to AximSite?
I have been looking for a great task list program, it's probably the number one thing I use.
If you wouldn't mind sending me the review, I'd appreciate it, otherwise I'll wait for it to be shown on this site.
