Reading News on our AXIMs
Hello - I'm a long time user of my X5, ActiveSync and Advantgo.
The time has come to refresh my whole system from a hard reset up and I'd love to hear about any news readers that have a good reputation.
Advantgo has been okay - barely. I fought with it to get it running. It ran okay for a while, off and on, but I'm not sure that I've spent more time reading news via Avantgo or fussing with it.
Anyone have any suggestions about either alternative news apps or how to stabailize poor old Avantgo? I'd also like to know if anyone has found a way to run Avantgo from the CF card rather than from valuable main memory.
Many thanks

the new avantgo (version 5.7) works great for me. i even have it in BIS. i couldn't get the old version running (the one embedded in PIE). i have it set up to wireless settings, so it's really easy to update.
hope that helps...

you can buy tome raider for ppc & windows, then use the free newsraider to grab news from various sites and package the results into a tome raider file on the ppc for reading.

Even running at 624Mhz, Avantgo is sluggish on my X30..and because it's installed on BIS writes to the cache are slow.

Newsmonger is good if the news sites offer RSS feeds. I use it to keep up on slashdot, news.com, usa today, and a few others. Give it a shot and see if it works for you.

I've tried Newsbreak and that worked pretty well. I too have totally dropped Avantgo as it was just too combersome to get it to work consistently.

I am using NewsMonger, but it isn't getting as much of each news story as I'd like. It gets snippets and leaves me with [...] at the end. Is it configurable?
Thanks!

Regarding RSS "configurable": some feeds include "full-text" and others do not. There is usually no configuration possible. Some feeds contain two elements, one is a summary and the other is the full text. If the reader is programmed incorrectly, then it may show the "incorrect" summary RSS element even if the full-text element exists.
For another choice in RSS text readers, try FeederReader ( www.FeederReader.com). And as your interests move into podcasting or videocasting, FeederReader will handle those as well. Also, if you need to receive BitTorrent feeds directly onto the Pocket PC, FeederReader combined with WinMobile Torrent works well today, and I'm improving it as we speak (type?).

If you are looking for a RSS reader, try SmartRss from BeetzStream, it downloads podcasts too. I found it's pretty easy to use, most of the time, you only flip between two screens to read the news. Strongly recommend use the "import opml file" function to add channels, as it's hard to type in an url without a key board.
