X5 backup utility fails

Recently I decided to cleanup my X5 by rebuilding after a hard reset. Now I find that the built-in backup utility fails to complete (gets close but dies at ~ 93% complete). It fails both to my CF card and BIS. A backup to my PC via activesync worked.

I'm running on the original ROM (A0011110200EN).
My PPC version is: 3.0.11171 (Build 11178).

The only other problematic symptom I've noticed is that my Avantgo refuses to update (this was part of my decision to rebuild - so this symptom is not new.

Anyone out there run into this before or have any ideas where I should start debugging this problem?

i much prefer to do a backup from the active synch PC gui.

and if your backing up for an upgrade, its higly suggested that

you only backup your PIM's, because if your using a full back

of your pda after an upgrade you will encounter some issues.

like media player.

so do a back of your PIM's and upgrade to A05.

the bit about avango is too vague for me to comment.

Well this is interesting. I've always done full backups (mostly via activesync) but I tried the backup utility on just the PIMs and it worked. Okay, that is the most important info on my PDA, but I also would like my custom apps backed up, and, when working, the backup utility is much faster.

Since the PIM backup worked, does this suggest that my ROM has developed a problem that backup can't handle or my hardware is getting old and has begun to fail?
