Ah, indeed, it is rediculously slow. I use a card writer.

Its seams a common problem for Pocket PC .. Microsoft provides terrible but needed applications, thus making it hard for a genre to evolve. (ie: Pocket Word is not very good, but it does make it hard for someone to make a living making something better. PIE isn't great, but not too bad either, but also makes it tough for others to exist. I guess the same for the Explore option in Active Sync. The net effect is suppressing what coudlo be a more fertile ground perhaps. (As opposed to something like the Today screen, where they merely provide the mechanisms, and the 3rd parties go to town.. hence much more variety.)
