The 'X' button in the top right is grayed out and disabled on the today since you can not close the today screen. It should become available once you have a program up and running.
One thing I like to do with one of the custom buttons, is to make it so that on hitting it, it copies and on hold it pastes. This way I always have an easy copy/paste even in apps that don't have the edit button. Comes in handy.
I have tried most of the other bar replacements and IcBar is, in my opinion, the best one out there...and its free!
Mike: Is there somewhere we can download your skins...I love the one with blue in it.

McCade,
Like the copy/paste concept, how did you do it?

"I loaded ICBar and it looks great - except - on the far upper right hand corner of the screen I have an X that is inoperable. Meaning that I cannot close out the current program, like in task switcher."
The X button is context related, so it isn't always available. There has to be something to close before it will be seen.
If the close button is not there or is not operable when it should be, check the settings ...
Start > Programs > Icbar > Settings, or tap the Icbar button on the Navbar if you have it enabled and select settings.
Scroll right/left until you get to "Close" and deselect "Go to Today" if you want the true-close function, and down at the bottom, check the "Execute" box, with Close selected in the drop-down list.
I'll post more about the skins later, after I get these bleeding taxes done.

Mike,
Thanks, it is indeed a better solution save the one error I have made somewhere... now got rid of the useless "X" and seem to have turned off my start menu!!
Have toggles side to side and cannot seem to figure out which button brings back a fairly important feature as I can't seem to access other programs now.
Sorry about the taxes,
Rich

In Icbar settings, go to Window Title, and enable it and the Open Start Menu feature. Also, or alternately, enable the Logo button, and check Execute, and select Start Menu from the list just to the right of that. Logo button will always be on the far left of the Navbar ... unless you altered the "Order".
I think a nav bar should be uncluttered and simple.
My current screen ...

Thanks - Great Help
Agree with the clutter and like the simplicity that you show with yours. Will try what you have laid out, I did turn off the Logo and Execute button...
Really appreciate the software suggestion and the directions.

I'm writing up a tutorial on skinning, because it gets kind of long-winded to put in a post here.
In the meantime, if anyone wants to rip one of the images I already posted ... feel free. Just right-click the image and save to your PC. Open it with a good graphics prog ... ie, not MS Paint ... and it should be full size, 240 x 26.
Icbar requires seperate images for each button, so they have to be selected from the original with a mask tool and saved as individual files. Each button can be 26 pixels high, but it can be smaller ... like 18 x 20. The trick is to know how Icbar places the button files on the finished product so that the images show up in the right place, with no gaps or misalignment. Picture drawing boxes around the buttons, starting from the extreme right edge, and butting up against each other from right to left.
The combined size of the buttons from side to side determines where the time display will end up, so sometimes the "Today" button would be made wider ... like 22 x 20 ... to force the time text into alignment with the background features, like a lens or cutout window. You learn how it works by trial and error sometimes.
Hint ... any black color on the button images will show up as clear in the finished product, so you can do transparent effects or see-through designs. If you want black without the transparency effect, the background has to be black there too.

Mike,
How about a lesson on whether to use or how to use the custom buttons in Icbar,
Maybe we should start a new thread?

Trouble in River City...
OK Mike, I get it... meaning the program is pretty simple and it makes sense to check the logo and all.... but
If ICBAR is enabled, it will not bring up a start menu? The order is ok and I cannot find anything that doesn't make sense.
If I click logo, I get an ICBAR double down arrow in the left hand corner - press it and I get the red dots but no menu?
Not sure what to do to troubleshoot this,
Thanks again and sorry to be a bother,
Rich

Yes, I agree. I'll start one in Tips & Tricks.
I think you mean when you enable the Logo button, the standard graphic is the double-down arrow. On the icbar settings page for Logo, it should look like this ...

Mike,
Yes, that is what I get, though the right side is their default icons. Clicking on the double down arrow just gets the red dots and no start screen. Sometimes, it pulls up the settings screen for ICBar,

You shouldn't get any red dots unless you're holding it instead of tapping. Are the settings for logo like I showed? Set for Execute, Tap, and Start Menu?
If you look at the drop-down list from Tap, it will show Hold. Select that, and the function changes to Icbar menu. Two functions for each button.
Just tap the Logo button instead of holding it and it should work.

McCade & Mike C,
I am really looking forward to the tutorial on skinning (or maybe even a more basic tutural on Icbar). I am especially interested in the copy and paste function that Macade mentioned. Would you please give me a heads up on where the new thread is on this subject?

That's the "Program Bar" feature of Battery Pack, set for Date and three rows of short-cuts non-scrolling. You can set it for up to five rows, or a single row with scroll tabs to access hidden rows.
