I like pocket mechanic and will recommend it to others. BUT with that said, I will never never ever defrag my card again with pocket mechanic. :)
I got pocket mechanic after I installed a bunch of softwares on my sd card. So when i got PM i decided to test most of the functions and scan disk and defrag my Kingston 512MB card. Everything went along fine and there was no error msgs. After defraging the card, I went back to play some games and found a bunch of my softwares are no longer working :(
Sadly I had to reinstall everything. On the bright side I took the opportunity to reformat the sd card. So I wasnt too upset about the loss. But I would definitely never defrag it again. Of course I'm not sure whether it was the Kingston card or Pocket Mechanic that cause the problem though. Anyway I still like PM and think its a great software and will definitely recommend it :)
defragging flash memory is pointless there are no moving parts the controller can access any part of the cards memory in the same amount of time not true with a hard drive that is why you defrag hard drives the read head has to move to the locations which can be scattered all over the hard drive platter if the drive is fragmented scattering on flash memory is not a problem if you think it is then erase your flash card and reload it and then see if you notice any difference in performance
Maybe I don't understand fully, but why would you want to defrag an electronic storage card? There are no moving parts and the additional speed from doing it would be negligible, wouldn't it?

The reason for the defrag was because i wanted to try out all those features that PM has. I mean how can you sit there and not try them :)
anyway I had version 1.49...too lazy to upgrade to the newest one (i think 1.52)
Well i just mentionned that after doing a google search on the software and thought it could be the reason for some problems.
Anyway pocketpc softwares are cheap and there are tons of freeware remplacements if you fin dthem still too expensive , so it's kinda useless to bother hosting a parrot.
I didn't think there was a benefit to defragging SD cards until 3 months ago.
I use Sprite to backup my system every night to my SD card, and keep the last 7 backups.
You can imagine how defragged the card can get adding and deleting full backups every night.
Well, one night it stopped and there was a reading error message.
I submitted the issue to Sprite's tech support, and they told me the reason was because of a frag issue, and to get PM and defrag.
I thought to myself, "Yea, right."
I downloaded the trial, did a card read test which was OK.
I defragged it which ran fine.
The next backup ran fine. I bought the program.
I defrag once a week, and haven't had a problem since (crosses fingers).
Maybe there are times when defragging makes a difference.
I don't know for sure, but I'll continue doing it once a week.
I bought PM some time Apr-05 and using it since then. I scanned the SD (1 GB Sandisk) and CF (1 gb Kensington) cards. Fortunately no issues. I did this only once and that was immediatly after bying...Curiosity Kills Cat...defrag did screw up few things...but I could recover as I always make a copy of POCKET PC files/Folders/programs every week (normally on a weekend) to my desktop. Complete Copy of Pocket PC should not take more time (To do this I connect to desktop wireless (vpn) or thru USB Credle).
Yes, DEFRAG is pain in the neck. I learnt it but in a hardway.
Actually I need to correct myself. I defrag on two different cards. One was my 512MB Kingston SD which resulted in some working softwares and others non-working. Then I defrag my 2GB Sandisk SD card which still worked perfectly but I only had videos on it. I am wondering if its the Kingston brand which is causing the problem or is it Pocket Mechanic. Regardless I would never attempt it again
Another question comes to mind on backups since MerlinAZ mentioned it. Be patient. I am still learning. Why would you want to do so many different backups with all different file names when the only one you will restore if you have problems is the last backup?
