If you just want to backup PIM, there's no need to use Sprite since you can just sync your PIM data. Sprite is good for backing up everything else (i.e., pick "all data"). Also be sure to use the self-extracting backup feature so that you can restore without having to install Sprite.
I'm a bit(?)confused with what to backup on my x50v, with Sprite. Is it *all data* or just PIM or what.?
With Sprite, you can select to backup everything, including BIS, CD & SD, or just selected items.
Normally, I just backup Main memory to a self-extracting file on my SD card; it's set to do that every morning at 6:00am and keeps 7 backups.
Think of Sprite as Ghost or True Image for a PC, it creates an exact replica of your PDA, so if you need to do a hard reset, you can be back up and running very quickly. I had to do that yesterday after having a problem with some new software; hard reset, restore, then sync. Was up in less than 5 minutes :)
I would like to know if the standard Windows Mobile 2003SE Data Backup program is efficient and reliable to recover ALL your data in a case of device HARD reset?
It clearly seems that Sprite Backup is the leader backup program.
But if you don't need to encrypt your data, to schedule daily backups and you don't mind about having a quick backup or restore program, is the standard Data Backup program enough?
Many thanks in advance for your good advice on that point.
The one time i tried it.. the built in backup didn't seem to restore all of the settings. But that may be because I hadn't backed up for a couple of weeks. That's why I think the Scheduled backup in Sprite is essential

I've installed many programs to the SD card and have many data files in there as well. How can I use Sprite Backup to backup such programs and files? I don't see Sprite Backup has any option to select stuff stored in SD card for backup. Please help. Thanks in advance.

In Sprite, Options-Backup Options-Exclusion Rules, un-check the box for "Persistent Storage"
I normally just pop my SD card into a card reader on the PC and copy everything to the PC.
I just bought Sprite and am wondering about the registry and programs stored on the SD card. With the built in back up I needed to re-install any software on the SD card in order for it to be recognized. Will the Sprite back up inlcude these settings?
and BTW, Sprite is in BIS, I back up daily at 4am, making a self extracting back up kept on SD, and backing up everything in main memory.

Is there anything that I'm missing?
When you backup, it saves everything, including the registry, files in RAM, shortcuts, etc. Files on SD or CF cards, or BIS are only backed up if you've chosen to backup persistent storage, which I do about every 2 weeks or so; BIS is where I install most programs, so not much changes there.
With the settings you've selected, you should be protected, I have a backup scheduled every morning at 6:00am, it creates a self-extracting file on my SD card, and I have it also set to keep 7 backups.
The 1st time you have a problem and need to do a hard reset, you'll really appreciate what Sprite can do for you, just hard reset, point file explorer to the backup and double-click, you'll have your PdA back in just a few minutes.
One thing you'll need to do after a restore is the very next sync with the PC will need to be done on the cradle, and you'll need to replace the items on the PDA with the items from the PC.

Just in case you may want to set Sprite to make a backup on your PC. I do mine daily. You may never need this backup; however, I did lose both my RAM and SD at the same time. Inconvenient and rare as hell, but Sprite saves the day.
I don't use Outlook. (Weird DLL, compatibility, missing data issue, lonnnng story.)
I had to recently do a Hard reset on my X30h and I thought I'd be fine because made a very recent backup via the ActiveSync way.....
However, when I restored, not all of my info was transferred, and NONE of my contacts or appointments or notes were either. They were all LOST forever!!
So.... I bought Sprite Backup and I have it scheduled to b/up every morning at 5:30am. So far it's been fine I guess but I'm wondering...since I do NOT use Outlook, will all my contacts/appointments/notes be lost--yet again--if I ever have to hard reset again ????

No, you won't loose anything. Sprite software by default, backups all the databases that exist on your Axim and so all your contacts/calendar/notes database should be backed up.

So if Sprite Backup does this ("backups all the databases that exist on your Axim"), I take it that the ActiveSync backup utility does not? Obviously it must not, since my restore attempt the other day (via ActiveSync) lost all my data!
I'm still heartbroken about this and am really hoping that investing in Sprite Backup will prevent it from happening again (God forbid that I ever have to do a hard reset again!) I just wish I knew what happened with the ActiveSync backup/restore process. I still wonder if it had anything to do with the fact I don't and can't use Outlook. siiigh.

Btw, I have Sprite Backup set to "Create self-restoring Backup files." Can someone tell me if this is a good selection and what exactly it means! thanks
