i'm going to the UK in a few months (HUZZAH!) and wanted a freeware map program.

like a map book in my PDA, but i dont have GPS.

i want a searchable map, area, street, then a map.

any freeware? recommendations if no freeware?

Try Mapopolis. It has a trial period so if you're not staying too long in the UK, that might work.

hmm. i wonder if theres Ebook of these. think about it, like a full map book in ebook form. could be useful. if theres no freeware map 'tools' that is.

found that, but how would it search maps? caus it says it uses raster jpg, bmp, png (etc) how can it search image files?

A-Z map books are the best street by street guides you can get in the UK and cover most of the major cities - if you need a free guide to the tube system Visual IT on the sites front page offer a free tube guide, I've tried it and it seems good.

interesting, Vector maps allow searching because they'e a full database, raster maps are just pics.

I have freeware that can handle Vector maps, now where can i download some HUGE map packs for it?

The program itself is free but the maps have a trial period where you don't pay for using them. That's why I said that if you're not going for too long, that might work for you.

If you have Pocket Streets you can download maps of the UK free from microsoft...

If you have internet access, you could use Multimap.com via Pocket Internet Explorer - that works okay for the UK.

Nope... you can buy it for $20-30 I think, it comes free as part of streets and trips (or Autoroute as it's known in the UK).

I had a look round and found it was the cheapest option a few months ago... but feel free to find a cheaper one if you like
