Pocket Genealogist

for the family historians out there..... :)

I just installed the 30-day trial version of Pocket Genealogist, and so far I am pretty impressed. I uploaded my 6700 family member, 7 mb gedcom to it from Family Tree Maker ver 9 (uncompressed just to see how it did). It took a while (about an hour), but it got it in there. I saved it to my CF card to save space. Nice thing is that when it resyncs the gedcom with the Axim, its a lot faster --cuz it's just looking for changes - but you need to re-save the gedcom from FTM for it to recognize the changes.

Because I have the trial version, I cant edit info on the Axim, but it looks like you can add notes and edit if you pay for it. You can change colors, and everything --including sources - is there. The basic version is $20 or $35 for the advanced---which has dome data entry stuff i think

This should be awesome for genealogy road trips!

Anybody else have any other thoughts on this software or found something else that works as well or better?

Thanks for the link. The site is not very clear on the editing ability of the advanced version. If you find a link to a review of the advanced form, please post it.

I went ahead and splurged for the advanced version. looks like the only diff is that you can import directly from the Legacy program and can acccess some configs that were locked out on the trial version (and get rid of the nag screen). however, if you have the "advanced" version, you will get the new update free when it goes gold. its currently in beta and looks like it will have data entry, better synchronization, ability to export to a gedcom and a bunch of other really neat stuff. In other words it will be more than just a viewer, which will be really cool. You can also participate in the public beta program to test it out if ya wanna.

to me, it was worth paying for, and i'll be patient and use it as is until the new version is available.

I can't wait to take it on the road! I'll prob head to a local historical society this weekend and maybe the Connecticut State Library in a month.

I was searching for information about genealogy programs (before posting a question that had already been asked - I get bonus points for that, don't I?) and was wondering if anyone who tried this program is still pleased with it, still uses it, or found any other alternatives.

I'm looking forward to being able to take all my research to the library with me without having to heft around a huge three-ring binder!!

downloaded pocket genealogist for the wife - advanced version. coverted her family tree maker to a gedcom file and transferred to ax. seems to work very well. be able to better tell how well the whole thing works when add notes to ax to transfer to desktop. :)

used this code at handango and got 15% off 37C10

Thanks for the information. Much appreciated! I haven't had much time lately to work on my geneaology mess, but would like to get back into it - maybe after the first of the year.

Hrmmm, I'm more than a bit disappointed that the trial version does not allow the entry/editing of any records in the PDA. Esentially making the trial useless to me, I can't even give the software a realistic tryout.

A 30 day time limited program would be better for allowing a real test, and would result in a better conversion/upgrade rate.

Instead of paying this company I'm searching for a different product which allows a real trial period.

I a, also wanting to know what you all have found to work. I have a fairly large gedcom file - which can be stored on a CF card, but want to make sure the transfer of data is successful & w/o bugs. Would greatly appreciate feedback!
