Instant Messenger or Voice Chat

Hi,
I wanna buy a pocket PC, and Dell Axim is one of my candidates now. Before I make up my decision, I'd like to ask a few questions about some apps ...
1/ Is there any instant messenger that works or is available for pocket pc ? I'll buy a PPC w/ Wifi + a foldable PC.
2/ Is there any voice chat software ( like Skype ) that's available or ppc ? if so, what model should I buy ( Ram, Rom, CPU speed ) to be able to run it. And also the microfone.

I decided to go for a PPC since it's much smaller than a laptop !!! ... since I need a laptop only for chatting w/ my gf, sometimes voice, so I'd rather spend 300 or 400$ for a ppc than a laptop ....

Thanks,

The Windows Mobile Operating System comes with MSN Messenger, so if that's all you're looking for, you don't need to install anything else. If you're just looking for AIM, get it free from here. Agile Messenger and imov messenger are also popular choices if you want to connect to multiple IMs simultaneously (e.g. MSN, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo). IM+ also does the same thing but is payware.

For a Skype alternative, I'd recommend Microsoft Portrait, which is also free. I've used it very successfully with voice and video. :approve:

to awnser 1. Almost all forms of Instant Messenger have some PDA compatible version. AIM, Yahoo, IRQ to name a few.

to awnser 2. Skype for PPC works great and I have used it often.

I would say get a x50v. But that is because I use it for many other things. If you just want it for AIM and Skype then a x50 mid should be sufficent. You only need 400mhz of processing power for Skype. But any more you get is helpfull.

I did some research on IM, and I found out that Yahoo just removed its IM version for PPC. But it's ok to me, since I'm using both MSN and YM.

I like Gigi's idea w/ the Microsoft Portrait, even though I know that Skype's sound quality is hard to beat ( I'm Skype user too ... ).

More Questions:
+ Is there any Webcam for PPC. It'd be great if it works with Dell X30. I can find some X30 from Ebay with great price ( ~270$ + 512 SD MB free ).
+ I don't have a PPC to test, so I leave this question for you guys. Has anyone ever tried to use a PPC as a Portable MP3 player?
I know I'm a bit greedy w/ this PPC, but it'll be great if I have all-in-one device that fits my palm ... lol ...

Thanks again for ur helpful replies ...

Yes, there are some cameras for PPC. I use the Veo Photo Traveler (CF), but they also make an SD version. Do a search on Google for "SD Camera" and you will find other options.

And yes, you can certainly use your PPC as an mp3 player. There are lots of free apps you can use (Windows Media Player - built in, GSPlayer, TCPMP, MortPlayer) - all you need is to buy a large memory card. :)
