Have you tried Pocket TV Browser or Pocket TV Listings (PTVL)? I believe thay support Canadian listings as well as US listings.

For anyone waiting, I apologise for the delay in the new version. This is for three reasons:
  • I haven't had much free time lately.
  • Alan Birtles is releasing a new version of his XMLTV Grabber soon, which should solve the problem of the imcompatible xml encoding.
  • I've changed the viewer from an xml-based system to a database-oriented one. It will only use the xml file to import the data into a database. This will happen only when it detects a new xml file. This should speed up the listings retrieval, even when there are a lot of channels to choose from.
Watch this space...

Would it be worth having the converter on the PC side? This would save having to download the XML over to the PPC at all.

It would be even more helpful if it could be controlled by command line using a parameter system. This would enable me to download the RT XML file AND have it converted straight after, by writing a simple batch file.

Yes, but strangely, the Start, Stop and Programme column headers are not. Any idea why that is?

One request I'd like to make for the software is the ability to add a highlighted TV programme as a Windows Appointment.

Yes, I picked up the slightly blurry headers on that version and Ian has since corrected that. I would forward you the corrected version, but I'd need Ian's permission. (It also has a nice search view added).

I don't think it will be too long before he brings out the next release, which seems to be a big step forward in terms of the way it handles the data.

Regards

Martin

I've noticed there isn't a way for XMLTV to sync with the listings file on the PC.
PTVL uses an ActiveSync plugin called ListingsSync (or something along those lines).
Hi Vinnielo,
Try MobSync. It's free, and you can set it up to sync any folder (even on a storage card or built in storage) with any folder on the PC. Works like a charm. Just create a folder with the xml file in it on your PC, and create a folder to receive the file on the PDA. You can set MobSync to always overwrite the PDA file quite easily. That makes the file transfer a one click job.

Regarding the conversion on the PC, I had thought about it, but wanted the whole process to be as streamlined as possible (people didn't seem to like having to use another program, like wordpad, to do the conversion). Converting on the PPC has memory problems. But as I said, the new version of XMLTV Grabber should allow output of a compatible encoding (windows-1252?) so there ahould be no need to convert.

So my plan is...

* Grab the xml file to Pocket_PC My Documents as usual
* ActiveSync transfers it to the device's My Documents
* My viewer picks it up and imports it to the database
* After a successful import it would delete the xml file

That would free up space in the device's My Documents folder.

The headers have changed, and are no longer blurry.

Adding selected programmes as appointments was something I'd thought of. If it'll be useful I can add it.

Brill. Thanks, Ian.
The RT XML software has command-line functionality, so I could write a batch file to be set to run each time Windows starts to grab the latest listings from the 'net!!

Does MobSync allow wireless syncing?

Yes, that's what I do, although I created scheduled task to run once a week which runs the xmtvrtc.exe (command line version) program. I don't want to grab listings more than necessary, as the radio times provides the feed as a kind of favour, so if it's abused they may withdraw it or start charging for it.

By the way, version 2.20 of the grabber has just been released by Alan. The RTXMLTV.ini file now contains an Encoding entry. So if you change it to Encoding=windows-1252 you won't need to mess around with wordpad or whatever before using the xml file... :)

Thanks for this tip - just installed both applications, and this is fantastic! Just when I was beginning to think getting UK Listings on my X50v wasn't possible! :approve:

EDIT: I have it all installed on an SD Card too, just in case anyone was wondering if it worked that way.

Glad you like it, Kinsman. The imminent new version should be quite a bit faster at retrieving listings. Also, it will support landscape mode for those that prefer to use it that way.

And thanks for the feedback on the SD card. I knew it worked okay for me from an SD card, but it's always useful to have confirmation...

I've uploaded version 1.1 of the viewer:

http://xmltvview.birtles.org.uk/epgviewer.html

It's important to use version 2.20 or later of the Radio Times Grabber:

http://www.birtles.org.uk/xmltv/

Also, the Grabber's ini file needs to be modified to produce the correct encoding for use with the Pocket PC Viewer. This needs to be done only once, and is very simple...
* Navigate to the Radio Times Grabber's installation folder, by default it's C:\Program Files\XMLTV Radio Times
* Locate the file called RTXMLTV.ini in that folder and double-click to open it
* Find the line in the [XML] section which begins with Encoding and change it to Encoding=windows-1252
* Finally, save the file, and restart the Radio Times Grabber

Changes since version 1.0
* Now uses a SQL database engine for increased speed when displaying listings
* Added a search facility - accessed via the View menu
* Removed the Stop column and added the information to the Description box
* Added support for landscape mode
* Horizontal scrollbars now appear when necessary
* Added more colours - SP2 or later of the .NET Compact Framework required for full colour support
* New installer - includes the SQL database engine
* Installer only includes files for the ARMV4 (Axim/iPaq) platform to reduce size

Please let me know what you think etc... :)

Cheers, Kinsman. Let me know what you think.

Oh, and I'll add the appointments facility to the next update. Didn't have time to do it for this one...
