Hi Ian,
Just reporting back that with the new version installed on my SD card, importing 9 channels took 3 mins 15 secs. In my opinion, this is no problem, considering that the load time of the program is now almost instant, and opening the database takes at most 2 secs - switching between days/channels is almost instant.
I notice that the main display now only shows start times, which makes sense as the start time of the next program is obviously the stop time of the previous one! This allows more room for program names, which was one problem I noticed with the previous version. It's good that it now brings up the listings automatically when you load the program, instead of having to open the XML file each time.
Thanks again for all your hard work! :approve:

The programme finish times are now attached to the end of their synopses.

Thanks for the positive comments, Kinsman.
Just to let you all know that a little bug snuck in. During import, programmes that have a blank description are ignored. For example, you may notice that the BBC1 main news programmes (at 6PM and 10PM) are not listed... oops
I'll fix this shortly and also add vinnie's suggestion to ask the user for permission to import...

If you are interested, I have generated a little utility for copying a single file from the PC to the PDA - see attachment below (hopefully if I managed to attach it properly...)
It is a commandline utility which uses ActiveSync built-in remote file access to copy the PC file to the PDA.
The syntax is:
copytopda <-b> <PC source file> <PDA destination file>
The -b allows for binary transfer - I copied a MOV file across successfully using the -b.
Regarding the TV listings, without the -b option, it automatically strips the '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>' from the XML heading file and converts the text from ASCII to UNICODE format.
I have a scheduled batch file which runs the xmltvrtc.exe followed by copytopda to update the TV listings on my PDA - works a treat.
While copying, it displays "." for each 1MB transferred.
Obviously use at your own risk... :)

Ian, if it helps the grabber does have an option to sort the xml file by channel and or date

Yes, I'd spotted that. The problem is that the programmes are still not grouped by channel or date, for example:
|
Code:
|
<channel id="100">
<date start="2005050930">
<programme title="Neighbours"/>
<programme title="Coronation Street"/>
<date/>
<channel/> |
But it doesn't make much difference now that I'm using a database, as the whole file is parsed to read the data into the database.

For your information, the code required to write a file to a PDA via ActiveSync is:
#include "Rapi.h" // Included in ActiveSync SDK
CeRapiInitEx(...)
CeCreateFile(...)
CeWriteFile(...)
CeCloseHandle(...)
CeRapiUninit(...)
It would be cool if the grabber could have an option to export directly to the PDA using the code described above :)

I've made a few changes and uploaded version 1.1.2 to the usual place. - Added a facility to set Outlook appointments for programmes (on the Edit menu) - see screenshot
- Programmes with a blank description are now shown in the listings (requires a re-import)
- The user is now asked before automatically importing a new listings file
- After import, the listings file is moved to the program installation folder and renamed to imported.xml

:)
If you want the full code for transferring the stuff, let me know :)
Feature requests:
- tap and hold context menu on an entry to add item to calender
- a view which shows what is currently on on all the available channels at a particular date/time (i.e. to quickly tell if there is anything worthing watching on Saturday evening or do we need to get a video/dvd)
- user pre-defined searches
- search to search program descriptions as well as titles
- make the borders slightly smaller? Gives more space for data. UI does look nice.
- automatically work out what programs I would like to watch and program the video recorder to record them
Adrian
(ps - last one requires the MS Mind-Reader .NET plugin to work... :) )

There is a working solution for UK PPC owners to view 14 days of a wide range of satellite & terrestial TV Channels, together with a synopsis for each programme.
The Pocket PC Viewer looks good on a QVGA PDA, but is very crisp on an X50v.

There are three steps;
1. Install XMLTV Radio Times, to allow download of the channel data from Radio Times to your PC.
2. Make a simple edit of the file using Wordpad before copying to your PDA.
3. Install XMLTV EPG Pocket Viewer to view the TV Programme schedules on your PPC.
Detailed instructions follow.
1. Download the TV Listings "Grabber"
XMLTV Radio Times 2.19 for Windows
Install this to your PC. When you run it, you can choose which channels to download, and set a location for saving the xml file, which contains all the downloaded TV channel data. A good place to save the file is the "My Documents" folder on the PC. You'll need to give the file a name. Mine is called TV.
2. Edit the TV.xml file you created above in Wordpad (NOT Notepad).
Open the xml file with WordPad.
On the first line, delete the encoding="ISO-8859-1" part only
Go to File Save As... and save it as a Unicode Text Document type
The last step is important. If you do not save it as a "Unicode Text Document" it will not work.
Copy this edited xml file to the "My Documents" folder on a storage card or built-in storage on your PDA.
3. Download XMLTV EPG Viewer Pocket PC Version
XMLTV EPG Viewer Pocket PC Version
Install as normal to your Pocket PC. You can install to either built-in storage or to a storage card.
When you run the programme, you'll see "Tap and hold here for menu" at the bottom. Do this, then navigate to the TV.xml file you saved earlier. You start to navigate by clicking on the little yellow folder with the arrow on it, which is at the bottom left of that screen.
That's it - the programme has nice simple layout and is easy to use.
It all sounds a bit complicated, but it isn't really. Editing the xml file with Wordpad is about the trickiest part. You download 14 days worth of programmes each time, so it's worth doing.
The author of the Pocket PC Viewer is very keen to receive feedback for improvement. For future releases, he is considering adding a utility to automate the file edit part, as well as making the colour scheme user configurable.
Please try the utility and give feedback to Ian (the author) at the place where you downloaded the Pocket PC Viewer.
Regards
Martin

Hum - a bit off topic for this thread...
I presume you are referring to setting up a dialup connection - if you are dialing from within the UK using a UK mobile phone to dial a UK ISP, then there is probably no need to use the 44 and area code 1 - just use the UK phone number required to dial the UK ISP as you would from any other UK computer. If it is not a UK phone/ISP/abroad, then I suggest you look on some of the other threads...
Adrian
(also a BAD idea to leave your email address in any forum - email harvesters will grab it and before long you will be flooded with spam...)

You should try posting your question in the Wireless Communications forum here:
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=31
You're more likely to get the expertise required to answer your question there.

Points 1, 2 and 4 are good ideas. I'll have a bash.
Point 3 I'm not clear about. What do you mean by "user pre-defined searches"?
Regarding the borders, I don't think it would make that much difference. I've sized them so that the listview items and textbox text sort of fit. I know they look a bit bigger on the Axim VGA screen, but not everyone has one of those
Plus, I have tried to make my app VGA-aware, but it's not working very well with .NET 1.x - apparently .NET 2 is much better...
