What is the difference between a .pwd and .psw?

If I save a Word doc as .pwd it opens fine in my Axim, but then when I transfer it back to my PC, I lose some of the formatting.

If I save a Word doc as a .psw, it opens fine in my Axim, and when I transfer it back to my PC it opens with all my formatting intact, except the document itself becomes almost twice the size it was before...what gives?

Both extensions can be opened in a PocketPC but there's something very different about them - does anyone know?
Thanks in advance...!
