I've been writing some documents using the Pocket Word problem and have experienced the same problem. When I try to save a larger file, over 11 k the machine seems to freeze on me.
Needless to say I have been doing a soft reset and losing all that I've written.
Is there a fix, am I doing something wrong or what??
thanks in advance.
Paul
(the only flaw in an otherwise wonderful machine)

How's your memory status?
As a test, I just loaded a 147Kb word doc, modified it on the Axim, saved it, and had no problems.

I was saving it to my cf card, and had over 2 megs of space available. At first I thought it was due to the fact I had a few programs running at the same time, but it wasn't the case.
Perhaps I should ask, how long did it take to save, sometimes it saved quickly and others, it was freeze.
I should add I was saving the file as a word .doc

As far as "saving", to me that means hitting the OK button, right?
It was instantaneous near as I could tell. I'm sure it matters more how much of a change has been made, and wether the file is all fragged to hell to start with. I had contiguous memory space, and only made a small change. I was saving to main mem (MyDoc).
I'd try it with different combos of memory and space to see if there's a pattern.
What really happens when you save a modified file? To see how fast the copy/write process is, just cut/paste a couple Mb of video or something from one location to another.
You could also try defragging, but you didn't hear this from me. Last night I did a hard reset and restore on a whim, just to see if the memory cards were also restored. They aren't. But watching the copy-restore process drag on, you can see it handles each file in turn.
I really don't even know if it's significant.

I'm trying different patterns. I'm saving to the CF card, which had over 2 megs so there was space. I've gone to the "save as..." and press the OK button, it reaches a problem and is very slow saving.. Usually it freezes. so, you think I may go to the hard reset.

How does your system memory look during all this?
(blush) I didn't even know there was a "Save As" feature. Still learning.

I too am currently having a similar problem.
I can copy word doc's to my CF card through the active sync explore function. At least I can copy small ones. When I try to transfer a much larger (several meg's) file (with embedded sigma plot graphs - not sure if that could cause a problem) the 'convert' funcion pops up to convert the document to pocket word format. Eventually, that conversion window dissapears (after no conversion) and the document was not transferred.
I know I can switch off the 'convert' function, but I would sure prefer to know why it is not working in this case.
I can copy all other formats of doc's to the CF card through the explorer, so I am sure I am not having any CF write problems or active sync exploere problems.
Any thoughts? thanks

My problem with Pocket Word took a new twist yesterday when I was able to work and save an 11 k document. I wish I knew what I did that was different.
I have noticed a few problems have a tendency to correct themselves. I hope this is a permanent correction.
It was easy to transfer the file and print it out of my work processor program.

I did cause a problem trying to paste a bunch of big docs for active sync to transfer, laden w/ graphics, and the download hung up. It must br trying to reformat the docs to suit the x, but if you've ever broken a graphic link in a Word doc (dreaded red X) you know it's sensitive. Stuff generated w/ W98, now 2K
I'm going to get the ClearVue suite to see if that handles it better.
Mind you, once the docs are finally downloaded to PocketWord, it reads and saves just fine (less graphics). And saving is still instantaneous. The problems I had are w/ Active Sync I think.

I was able to copy the doc to my Ax after I turned off the conversion to pocket word documents setting in active sync.
I assume the document was not able to be converted because I used a NON MS program to make up the graphs in it. Gheese, you would think that MS would let ya use other softward vendors for graphs and stuff.... but I guess they just didn't support this kind of embedded document in pocket PC.
Mike: yes, I have had the BIG RED X a few times in my documents, a real pain in the back when you sometimes have other authors with the source data sitting on their computer somewhere across the country.
But, at least I can now copy the file and transfer to my home PC without a zip disk. Anyone else use their Ax as a floppy disk between work and home? (I don't mean to demean the Ax, just pointing out yet another incredible use for this machine)

So if you don't convert to PW format, how do the docs look?
Guess I'll just have to try it.

Mike,
Here is what I end up with:
From a word document with embedded Excel graphs everything converts to ppc format and I can see the graphs in the pocket word document. I was quite impressed with this, I did not expect to be able to view any graphs at all (especially considering the file was about 5 meg on the desktop, converted to 1.4 meg or so on the Ax, if memory serves)
From a word document with embedded SIGMA PLOT graphs, no conversion done to ppc format, simply copy and paste the file to my CF card: all the text is viewable just fine, but sigma plot graphs are missing in their entirety. Will post when I get home on weather or not the sigma plot graphs are still in the document when I get on that desktop. I assume ppc just does not know how to display sigma plot graphs, so for now I have my fingers crossed that they are still there.

Cool. Does ClearVue suit your needs?

Not sure if we mis-communicated,
I am not using ClearVue, in fact, I am not familiar with it at all.
So far I have not added any significant software to the Ax. So, for now, I find that the canned software is suiting my needs. (at least without converting word doc's - does anyone know what the benefit is of the conversion? does is only reduce file size?)
What all is ClearVue?

It's a pay-for suite of programs to see and work on stuff without loosing any formatting.
I didn't think you had it, but was asking if these features are useful to your needs.
clearvue stuff
