but I got fed up with having to go back to Today to access them, especially when apps like TdLaunch or RhinoLaunch can hold many more Icons.

Well, as it is I only have one app running on my systray -- GSPlayer, and I like that, becasue if I cilc on the icon I have a nice cascading menu coming up from it, where I can control MP3s or what have you, right from the today screen, I can also hit a harware button to switch the app on and off, and it has a custom skin I designed that fits in with the rest of my system (I'm a detail freak and a graphics monkey

)
for running tasks, I like the Icbar method, of stacking them on the task bar (that is only logical... actaully), what I would prefer to see on the systray would be a launch system, not simply one-click icons, but icons representing sets of cascading menus, or something along those lines.
Actually, what I;d find most useful would be to assign Icbar buttons to the bottom bar, like put battery meter, some shortcut buttons, and so on down there.
