How long does it take for MS Reader to open a book ?
After updating the MS Reader to its latest version, I activated, and then I tried to open some ebooks. Thing is, when I tried to open even a very small book (like Time Machine or Journey to the Center of the Earth), the Axim takes almost a minute to open the book, and then another 2 minutes to actually go to the first page

Is this happening to you guys as well ? Or is it just me ? Its an Advanced, o/c to 498MHz, and with plenty of storage/program memory left.......

I had the same problem before WM2003. Now, it's at most 10 seconds to open a book and 5 more seconds for first page access.

ESPER out...

It seems that M$ Reader repaginates the book when you open it based on your font settings. For some books, this can take quite a while. I've got one novel that takes nearly 4 minutes to go to the most recent page. Other books, especially those with graphics and/or complex table of contents pages also seem to take forever to open.

I downloaded the MS Reader plug in for Word to convert some or my documents to .lit files. The plug in works well, but I've found that the opening time goes up considerably after adding a table of contents. I think the reader has to update the table pointers once the document is repaginated (which adds even more time).

Hmm, they seem to open pretty quick for me. A couple seconds when it is slow to opent the book, and pretty much instantly to open the recent page.

WM2003, AO5, 400MHz.

It seems to depend on who makes the e-book. For example, Rosetta books seems to have a reputation for creating books that behave like this.

I added the new reader and while it's somewhat slower than the original reader it takes about 12 seconds to pen the table of contents and about 10 seconds to go to the furthest read page in the book.
My Ax is about 6 months old, I bought it in February and have done no upgrades. I am using the original software.
I found downloading the new MS Reader a little tricky, but finally got it.
I don't know if this frustrates you or helps?

So I understand PPC2003 is better in this area ? Hey, what do you know, PPC2003 does something better than PPC2002

Anyway, I'll do some "tests", in order to see if writer/producer have anything to do with the speed of the Reader......

But come on, this is ridiculous, 2 minutes to open up a 200KB file , on supposedly one of the fastest PPCs out there......

Err, between the lack of a dedicated video controller and the underused FSB, the Axim is far from being "one the fastest PPCs out there" (not even counting the buggy A04 WM2003 ones).

Regarding MS Reader, I heard it had something to do with DRM, ie the previous version's security had been cracked. The new one is more secure, but at a cost wrt speed.

Still, it IS a PDA with a 400MHz XScale processor and 64MB, right ? That makes it a pretty fast PDA in my eyes.....

Anyway, after some tests I indeed verified what I said earlier (about 2 minutes to open a 200KB book ), but I guess I will have to live with it, if I want to read any of these books while on the road........

I gave up on M$ Reader. I use iSilo. It has every feature that Reader does but it's infinitely faster. They also have a document convertor.

I am using reader on my Ax (with 02 and AO3) and do not have any problems with it loading......the max time for any book is 10-15 seconds! I know the upgrade for reader helped cure a memory leak, but I think that its nuts that it takes you guys 5 mins to open one book!!

True, it has some impressive numbers... But this 400MHz CPU is crippled by the lack of data for its processing power on the new models ("thanks" to the crippled system bus on the PXA255 Axims), and the RAM is extremely low grade... The lack of a video controller is the biggest problem, though. I've recently tried a Toshiba e755, and it's incredibly faster than the Axim.

I'll readily agree that the Axim (especially the Advanced one) is a fast PDA for its price tag. But speed-wise (leaving price aside for a minute) it's not in the same league as Compaq's latest models (Ipaq2210 or 5550), Toshiba's (e750/755), or Asus (MyPal A620).

But I'm much more bothered by the Axim's cheap hardware and lack of reliability (*cough* SD card with important data *cough*) than by its speed, though.

Bad upgrade, bad bad
A numebr of posts have been dedicated to the MS Reader issue and it remains puzzeling. I have been an avid user of MS READER since the first week of having my AX. The day I upgraded the MS Reader to take advantage of the free books that MS offered is a day I regret. It has been a very disapointing experience. I still use MS reader, yes I know that ther are other types out there and I have tried them but to me the MS Reader is just what I need, simple and powerful, unfortunatly also slow.
A while back I posted a link to the MS Reader help site that allows suggestions and complaints to be registered but not sure how amny peopel actualy complained. The wierd part is that soome of us are fine with the upgrade and some of us are slower than two turtles making love.
By the way if yoru an SF lover head to www.baen.com
They have a ton of absolutley freee e-books by many of thier more favored authors. Also if you use the websubscriptions (which I have) you can pay for 4 books for about $15 and you can then also send the same subscripton to a friend and they can download the books for free......these are not boks that have been in the public domain for 50 years but first run hot SF. Bujold, Drake, Webber, Flint and Ringo just to name a few.
I remain an avid fan of E-books and hope trhey contiue to become more main stream and accepted
