Help for a handicapped person with ALS...
I had an email from a colleague yesterday concerning a friend of his who has recently been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease, or motor neuron disease). The first affected area in this individual is apparently speech.

The question was posed specifically in terms of an iPAQ, namely was I aware of any text-to-speech utilities that would allow the individual to communicate, particularly by telephone.

Does anybody know of TTS software that might integrate into phone functions directly?
Otherwise, any comments on available TTS software would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Derek

HP sells a TTY/TDD Adapter (FA709B), which I think enables this functionality:

The TTY/TDD Adapter enable a connection for hw6000 series customers with hearing/speech disability who want to use a TTY/TDD device. These devices, TTY (teletypewriter) and TDD (telecommunications device for the deaf), enable a deaf or speech impaired person to communicate via the telephone.

I don't know much more than that.

A little better than TTY?
Hello Casey,
Saw your post and thought I'd reply. Check out this link that allows persons with speech impairments to talk on the telephone without using an internet connection or a TTY.

Telephone System For Persons With Speech Impairments

I think it's something that might definitely help your colleague.
