The battle continues: which shall be the victor?
Alright everybody, I need your help. Currently myself and a good friend are having a discussion about plams vs PPCs, and I need some ammo. If you would, please put forth your thoughts onto why PPCs have the edge. Also, some thoughts on which will be around longer, the Palm or PPC, would be appreciated.

Okay, and just remember, don't have too much fun with the plam bashing. Thanks

Apples vs Oranges... which is better?

Seriously, the average palm unit and the average PPC unit are targeted to entirly different market segments. With the higher end units there is some overlap and dependin on requirements the palm or the PPC would be appropriate.

Remeber that PPC doesn't work at all for people not running windows, that have existing software that they need, battery life is better ( generally ), and much more.

So this palm vs PPS is a useless fight until PPC decides that it wants to release active sync for mac, linux, and shave $100 off the price of the units.

Snowmoon is correct. The 2 devices are too different to try and compare seriously.

My 2mb palm can hold thousands of contacts and can retrieve them quickly. My 64mb PDA won't hold 32 times more contacts, and I've notice it bog a little at a large number of contacts.

My palm can hardly do anything else besides hold contacts and appointments while my pocket pc can do much much more. It's like trying to compare the mobile phones to a pda. Sure the mobile phone can hold contact info and calendars, but it usually stinks at it.

It's like comparing motorcycles to cars.

TRY DOING THAT ON YOUR PALM.
1. I think there are 3rd party apps that allow this on PalmOS5
2. Nope, don't think Palm can do that yet.
3. Yes, on new OS5 devices.
4. Have been able to do that for many years.
5. Several 3rd party apps (like Documents to Go) allow for this, including Powerpoint as well. And native file support via email and onboard apps are in Beta right now.

Don't kid yourselves, PalmOS is very powerful as well. The OS, though, mainly came with just PIM and you had to buy 3rd party apps to get what PPC could do right from the factory.

As for memory, Palm's don't need anywhere as much. Palm OS's and apps can do their thing with 1/4 of the code because it is specifically designed for handheld computing, as opposed to a modification of Windows. PPC's have faster processors and more memory because they NEED them. Ever tried out a Tungsten T? IIRC, it's a 175 Mhz processor and it's blindingly fast.

Nontheless, if you're a Windows user, PPC is native to virtually everything on your desktop and comes with all the bells & whistles.

I started on Palm but am very glad to have switched to PPC. Would I go back to Palm? Yup...when they reach the ability of PPC's (probably only a couple years away). I would consider it depending on what units, both PPC & Palm, are out there.
