Yes. Under WM5 security model, the unsigned system service dll cannot be loaded during system bootup time. Using a small exe file in startup folder to load the service is a work around solution. It simply loads the status monitor service and terminates itself. So don't worry about that there will be an extra process running. It will only be there for a few milli-seconds at most.

 

Good idea. Wifi & bluetooth signal monitoring could be future features. But i'm running out of space since I'm already taking top and bottom. I'm a bit relunctant to take the sides. Hmm...

Well, you could either:
1. make the user compromise by only being able to show 4 out of 6 meters

or

2. have three meters on top and three meters on bottom

or

3. allow the user to have as many meters as he or she chooses and have the program autofit them. So the option screen could look like:

For example, if the user had every checkbox checked for TOP, the program will try to autofit all 6 bars. It will be pretty small and the user should have moved some of the meters to the BOTTOM, but it's the user's preference (I know some people that run their monitor at insane resolutions but have a tiny monitor).

It would be a good idea to have a thin divider between meters to more clearly define the boundaries of each meter.

I've just finished reading through this entire thread. It's a great example of action-reaction repeated over and over as Dogfood has written what appears to be a nice application that has been tweaked on the fly based on good suggestions from thread participants.

I would ask one question and also make one suggestion. Can this app be used to actually modify lines of the registry as it's name _might_ imply? If so, it would be helpful to include information in this thread's first post on how to do that. Likewise, Dogfood might consider adding a brief statement about install options.

Doggie... I liked the soft reset button, so as a future option, maybe a soft reset icon on the screen someplace obscure? Sometimes you need to do a SR when the unit is in the car mount, and it would be nice to do that without having to remove the unit.

Hi, may I suggest colour change at different levels of battery levels like Batti. Changes colour when it goes below 40% and 20% perhaps? Customizable to whichever level we like...

  

A similar program, but not as customizable, is XscaleMonitor (http://personales.ya.com/beemer/xscalemonitor.htm). It features a rainbow scale of colors to represent different levels and for me, it was very confusing. I even had to print out the color scale and stick it onto my pda case so I could refer to it. It was just a case of information overload. I find dogfood's separate meters for everything to be much better.

I suppose a compromise of having the bars go from red, yellow, and green would not be too taxing on the senses.

Is the offical name of this app Dogfood's RegTweak? I keep referring to it as 'this app' or 'Dogfood's app'. The thing is, I use the app for the meters and have no interest in the registry tweaks part.

A free app to edit the registry manually, is Total Commander (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm). To save you some confusion, to get to the registry, click on \ and then \\.

Not sure how a softbutton would work when the app's interface is just a few rows pixels on the top and bottom of the screen. Psshutxp is a free app that allows you to turn off the display, turn off the device, or do a softreset. It can put a icon on the lower-right corner of the today screen for you to access it. (http://ppcsoft.narod.ru/english/). Another alternative is Magicbutton, a task manager that shows an icon in titlebar. If you hold the stylus on the icon, it will show a menu with an option to reset the device. (http://www.trancreative.com/mb.aspx). But usually when I need to do a reset, the machine is too frozen up for me to click to anything.

Thanks folks for all the great ideas! RegTweak is kind of a confusing name for the monitoring part. That was how it got started. Please bear with me there.

Unfortunately I don't have the bandwidth to do everything everyone wants. Especially different person has different, and often conflicting taste. For features I would consider doing, please check out the "Possible new features in the future" section in the first post of the thread. I'll keep updating that section.

Thanks, badbob001, for pointing out a few utilities whose features some people asked. Indeed I do not plan to put in features that other apps already do a good job at, especially when they are also available free. That being said, I would not plan doing registry editor, soft-reset button features. As for having different color for different status level, I too find it is confusing. It would be okay if there is only one thing being monitored. But not when you have four different status.

Now I've fininshed coding the feature to allow changing the system colors and shell colors. But I'm not sure if everything is correct (mostly works on the emulator). Also I haven't looked into the potential conflict between shell color and theme colors. Would you like me to post the beta version? Please vote.

This can already be done with psShutXP, which can put an icon in the system tray that gives you access to soft reset, power off, and screen off.
