cool! i called my parents with the standard "guess where i'm calling from!!!" message. I'm such a dork...

One minutes seems short, but it could still be pretty useful in an "emergency". It's more time than you get with the 'ol message-in-place-of-name collect call trick anyway!

Is there a limit to how many of these you can make?

Hi Kryten007,

I don't believe there's a limit to the number of '1 minute' calls you can make. The company behind VoIPCheap (Finarea SA) have quite a few VoIP companies on the go (VoIPBuster, InternetCalls, SIPDiscount, etc) and I'm pretty sure that most of them (if not all) offer the 1 minute trial calls to landline phones in certain countries. I've written an article about Finarea SA on my website if you're interested. Pay a 'registration fee' and enjoy unlimited 'free' calls to the same countries on the trial call list. Note: The registration fees vary between the Finarea SA companies and they change often.

Cheers

you need to pay for skype out. but with this, you can make free 1 min calls to landline phones for free. This might come in very handy in emergency situations.

It works with my x51v. Just make sure you download the SJPhone for WM5 beta.
This voipcheap is in UK. Any similar service in US? I see someone mentions SIPDiscount. What are the connection strings? I don't seem to be able to get it to work. =(

They are all basically the same.

For sipdiscount try this for proxy: sip.sipdiscount.com

Good read. I finally ended up getting the unlimited from voipdiscount.com. They are offering free calls to a lot of countries (51).

Thanks!

I've been using SIPDiscount for a few months now and have experienced very few problems in terms of quality and/or service continuity. People have hypothesized that Finarea are keeping tabs on the numbers people are calling (presumably to sell to Telemarketers and the like) however that remains to be seen. I guess when something appears too good to be true, it usually is... Time will tell.

Someone else asked about a North American equivalent. Unfortunately I don't know of any 'free' calling equivalent (although they pop up from time to time) however I can certainly recommend a very cheap 'paid' service from VBuzzer. They charge 1c/min to 20 countries and I've been using their service for quite a while now without any dramas.

Cheers

I'm in the US and it works swimmingly for me. I followed the posted steps verbatim and was on the line with my parents (in the US also) in seconds.

There is a slight delay, but that might just be my dad Just kidding, i love 'em...

Erm....if it were that much of an emergency, why wouldn't I just pull out my cell phone and use it? Hmmmm.....?

Is there any way you can make calls for longer than 1 minute? Like, a contract of some kind? Will this limit be increased in the future?
