Are Styli Days Numbered.
I deal with electronics on a day to day basis at Delphi Chasis Systems and something came across my desk the other day. I'm gonna type this in verbatim. The article is located in the January 2004 edition of Electronic Products.

Tiny Mouse adds 360 degree control to PDAs, digital cameras

Measuring less than 10x10x1.4mm and offering 360 degree cursor control, MicroNav is characterized as the industry's most compact and advanced pointing device. Based on the company's patented force-sensing resistor technology, the device provides precise positioning data for Web browsing, gaming, and image editing in next-generation cell phones, GPS systems, PDAs, and digital cameras.

The device operates with force sensitivity of 1 to 100N and turn-on force of less than 1N. It is not affected by noise or vibration and is EMI/ESD-passive device.

The device is offered in three configurations - sensor only, sensor with microprocessor, and board mounted system. It is supplied for tape-and-reel systems and supports solder reflow techniques.

You'd still need a stylus for a decent means of text input, so I'd hardly say that its days are numbered. Without a stylus, you would have no way of handwriting recognition or soft keyboard entry. Your only option would be a built-in mini keyboard, which would completely turn many people (including myself) away from the PPC.

But it does sound like a decent replacement for the D-Pad, although this would disappoint all of the gamers out there.

My Sig

If I lived back in the wild west days, instead of carrying a six-gun in my holster, I'd carry a soldering iron. That way, if some smart-aleck cowboy said something like ‘Hey, look. He's carrying a soldering iron!’ and started laughing, and everybody else started laughing, I could just say, ‘That's right, it's a soldering iron. The soldering iron of justice.’ Then everybody would get real quiet and ashamed, because they had made fun of the soldering iron of justice, and I could probably hit them up for a free drink.
