REVIEW : DSI X3 Case
New case from our old friends DSI. From the makers of the popular Holster for the Axim X5 comes an aluminum case for the Axim X3 and X3i. Made from anodized aluminum and neoprene and weighing 1.6 ounces, this case does a great job at making your X3/X3i look great while protecting it.

Read Gigi's Review

"The DSI aluminum case for the Axim X3/X3i is an attractive, sturdy case that will protect your Axim well. Although it has some design flaws, it represents good value for a case of this quality."

Are any of these cases including space for extended batteries?

Very good review. How would you rate it as compared to the Rhino skin case? They look similar. I know that the DSI case has only one SD card holder. Is the quality similar? Is the Rhino case worth $10.00 more? I think that is the current price difference on Aximcase.com.

I have not tried the Rhinoskin case, but from what I have read (see Chris's review), it seems that the DSI uses a stronger aluminum since it doesn't bend at all. The main issues I had with the DSI were the SD holder and the misaligned cutouts. Also, the cost of the belt clip is extra and quite steep. If you don't mind the problems with the cutouts (didn't really affect functionality for me) and the SD holder, and also don't need a belt clip, then the DSI represents good value in my opinion. If you need the belt clip option, you may may want to consider the Rhinoskin.

No, these cases will not accomodate the extended battery.

Problem with DSI case
Just got my DSI case for my Axim X3 today. The door of the case rubs the top right edge of my Axim (silver painted edge near the stylus silo) and has actually rubbed some of the paint off! The neoprene (sp?) liner doesnt go all the way to the edge of the door and each time you close the door it rubs slightly against the edge of the Axim. Anyone else notice this?

I just checked the model that I tested and I noticed the same thing!!! The paint is chipping away at the same right corner as well. I'm going to contact DSI and I think it would be helpful if you did as well.

Thanks for checking this out so quickly. I will contact DSI but I bought my case from Aximcases.com. I bought this case to replace a Krusell leather case (could not use sync cable with Krusell case and other problems). I am having no luck with cases. Not being able to sync in the case with the Krusell is bad enough but now I have a case that has damaged my Axim!

Back to your original comment about contacting DSI. Do you think I should contact them even though I bought from Aximcases.com? I know DSI is the manufacturer and I hate to bother Slava or Anna with another defective case. They have both been very nice.

Yes, I think it would be appropriate to contact DSI as this might be more than just an isolated case and perhaps a serious design flaw. If you want to exchange your case, you can also contact Aximcases as well, but I feel that this is something that DSI should know about. BTW, I have already emailed them.

DSI email
Gigi, Thanks for your help

I just emailed DSI and I sent you a copy of my email to them. I hope they do something to fix the problem. Not being able to sync in the case is better than having my case whittle away at my Axim each time I close the door. I guess I will use the Krusell until this is resolved. It looks like the problem might be resolved if the neoprene at the bottom were thinner. This would allow the Axim to slide down a little further. I guess its already pretty thin though. You would think that they would notice a problem like that during the prototype stage. No telling how many of these cases are out there.

You know the worst thing about this is that it is really a nice case other than this problem. But you buy a case to protect your investment from scratches and damage...not to cause them.

I agree with you...very frustrating because it IS quite a nice case. BTW, where did you send the copy of the email? I haven't received anything. If you would like to resend it, try gigi at aximsite.com.

Email response from DSI:

Thank you for contacting DS International regarding this issue. We have
passed this issue on the factory, as this is the first time we have

Temporary solution for DSI case
Both Gigi and I have contacted DSI regarding the problem we are having with thier aluminum case scratching our Axims. As a temporary fix I placed a thin peice of black electrical tape on the top edge of the case door. This doesn't look great but it keeps the sharp edge of the door from doing any more damage until a solution is discovered. I would appreciate anyone else who has this case letting us know if they are having the same problem. I know one other person mentioned that they did not have the problem. What we need to know is if this is an isolated issue or if it is something that may have already happened to your Axim but you may not have noticed. What you would look for is scratched paint or plastic along the top edge of the Axim where the DSI case door closes. It is a very snug fit and in my case, (no pun intended) too snug. The door actually catches the top edge as the door closes. Just to repeat this for those who might ask, the Axim is slid down into the case as far as it will go. Mine is only scraped on the side near the stylus silo however Gigi has said her's is scratched on the other side as well.

Thanks to all for any input.
