Internet/sync over bluetooth
Dunno if this is the right forum but here goes

I have a 3630 with bluetooth/cf expansion jacket

If I drop my pda into the docking station - it active sync's fine and I can surf the internet through my broadband

What I really want to do is surf the net (or more specifically use msn) anywhere in the house

I have a bluetooth dongle on my pc and have succesfully transferred files to and from my pda with it

But I cannot for the life of me work out how to connect to net
If I try to active sync over the bluetooth it comes up saying there is no serial connection available on my pc

Im running windows xp sp2 by the way with proper msi bluetooth drivers - but do have the newer microsoft certified drivers which I can install if it helps?

Cheers

I haven't done much with BT, but Ted Whtely has a guide linked from the home page of this site that may be some help. I think for ActiveSync, you need to have the "Allow network and RAS..." box checked (in AS on the PC, File, Connection settings...).

You may also need to set any firewalls (including the one in WinXP) to allow access.

You should be able to surf via AS passthough once you get that working but I think you may also be able to set up Internet Connection Sharing on the web connection on your PC. In fact, I just glanced at Ted's guide and it does give the details for doing that. Good luck.

I've completely given up - none of the options that guide says to set are available on my pc - I dont think its based on Windows XP SP2, and adsl broadband
There isnt an option to enable internet sharing - because I connect to the internet through a LAN

The option for ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) is available on XP SP2. The guide was mostly written based on Windows 2000. There are a few differences. Since I am not in front of a XP machine at the moment (I'm at work) I suggest you use the Help option on your system and search for ICS or Internet Connection Sharing. It will point you on how to turn it on.

For the most part if you click on My Network Places and locate Local Network Connection. Right click on it and go to properties. The last tab in the properties page should have the option for ICS.

Not when you connect to broadband over a LAN - because the network connection is just a lan connection - the broadband is handled by a hardware router with NAT translation..

No. The trick is you enable ICS on your LAN adapter. ICS turns your computer into a gateway. Your PPC would connect via Bluetooth to your PC Bluetooth interface. Then if you want to access LAN/WAN resources or the internet then your PC's LAN interface is used as the gateway to those resources. So your PC will do internal routing. All of this is handled by ICS.

I have done this many times and it works like a charm. It even becomes more useful for me because my office does not have Wifi so I use Bluetooth as a substitute.
