Have virtually no hair left myself, with a similar sounding problem with HP hx 2410 and a Sony Ericsson V600I and Vodafone UK. Read and browsed lots for the answer.
For future reference for others when trying to solve your problem make sure you get through to the right people on their Helpline. The
data crowd were great and solved the problem in 3 minutes.

The rest had sent me down lots of wong paths emailed me instructions that did not work, kept me on hold for 30 minutes and dropped the line several times.
In case it is of help to others the UK settings for Vodafone are
Start>>setting>>connections
Click on the connections icon
Then either add a new modem connection or manage existing connections, depending on whether or not you have already tried
Set the modem as a Bluetooth Dialup Modem Click NEXT

(Make sure dialing rules are disabled click NEXT
User name web
Password web
Click ADVANCED button
General tab
Baud Rate 115200
Remove tick from wail for dialing tone
Extra dial string command Z
(That is just a single capital Z)
Port settings tab
Data bits 8
Parity none
Stop bits 2 ***** had to change this
Flow contrl hardware
TCP/IP Tab
Use server assigned IP address
Use software Compression
Use IP Header Compression
Servers Tab
Use Server assigned addresses
