Below is a step-by-step guide on how to set up your bluetooth phone with your Axim to connect via GPRS. I've included the settings for Orange UK as an example:
1. Turn Bluetooth on.
2. Go to Start - Settings - Connections. You should see a screen like this:
3. Tap on "Add a new modem connection."
4. Choose a name for this connection, e.g. "GPRS Aximsite"
5. Under "Select a modem", use the drop-down menu to select "Bluetooth Dialup Modem". Your screen should look like this:
6. Click next.
7. Enter the number you wish to dial; for GPRS, the number is almost always *99#:
8. Click next.
9. Depending upon your network, either fill in username and password or leave them blank. Most networks prefer you to leave them blank:
10. Tap on the "Advanced" Tab.
11. Change baud rate to "57600".
12. Uncheck "wait for dial tone before dialing."
13. IMPORTANT. Input your networks extra dial-string command. For instance, my network is Orange and I would input +cgdcont=5,"IP","orangeinternet" . Check with your network for your settings. Your screen should now be something like this:
14. Click OK in the top right hand corner.
15. Click "Finish".
You're now ready to pair your bluetooth phone with your Axim. See
Whitelyt's excellent guide here to find out how to do that. When you get to the screen "Select a connection to use", instead of tapping "new conection", you should see "GPRS Aximsite" (or whatever you chose as a name). Hold the stylus down on that, and tap connect.
That should be it! I posted this because more and more networks are requiring the dial-string command to be included before you connect to their GPRS network. So for all of you experiencing difficulty connecting your phone to your Axim via BT to be used a modem, try this out and hopefully it should work.
Also note that it is possible to dial-up via the AOL local rate number (I used to use 08450790003 but it's probably changed), but you need the AOL PPC software, which can be bought at Handango. However, you'll only achieve WAP speeds, the internet browser in the AOL software doesn't work, and all in all it's probably a better idea to use GPRS, and add a "x"MB data bundle to your account with your particular network.
Hope this helps.
Cheers all.
