Ted's Guide - still no success with PPC & PC
I've spent hours in frustration trying to connect my HP4700 via BT to the internet via my laptop, hardwired to a LAN.

I have read, re-read and followed Ted's Bluetooth Guide but have had zero success.

I have ensured my LAN connection is set up to allow ICS, and then have attempted to add a new BT shortcut on the iPaq with BT Manager by selecting "new," "connect to a network," select the discovered laptop icon, but it always fails! with the following message:

Service discovery

Service discovery was unsuccessful.

Details

Waiting for the device

X The requested service is not running on this device. Please make sure the service is enabled on the device or select another one to continue.

I would be most grateful if someone could please help me figure this out. I have literally spent hours and hours without any success whatsoever.

Thank you in advance,

-P

Patricia - Since you aren't getting any "love" from the Bluetooth Guru's on this one I, a novice, will give it a shot. Did you configure Network Access on your laptop? If not, go to My Bluetooth Places on your laptop click on "view available services" you should see My Network Access listed as one of the services; highlight it and click on "enable Network Access service". You then want to click on "display the properties of this service" and check the box you find there to start the service automatically, on the same page you will need to choose the type of service you want to offer to remote devices from the drop down list. After you have made your service selection you want to press the radio button to "Configure Network Adapter", this should get you closer to a connection - if not post back and and we can try some other remedies. Or if we are lucky one of the experts will show up and teach us both a thing or two! BTW - Cute dog in your avatar.

Thank you for your reply - I was beginning to feel unwanted

Unfortunately, I have already accomplished the steps you have outlined - several times. I have had this problem with two different laptops, one with a dongle and one with BT integrated. While waiting for someone to respond, I found this thread (scroll down to the last post by Stevvie):

http://www.ipaqhq.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17953

It appears that Bill Gates has struck again. My only concern is not understanding exactly what change this loopback network driver might do to my system.

Any thoughts?

(Thanks for the avatar comment -- a nearly exact resemblance of my sweet Golden, Maggie)

Can you post back with information on your drivers? If they are the default Windows drivers that is most likely where your problem lies, you may need to force Windows to use the drivers that came with your dongle. I ran into a similar problem when I installed my dongle where it would not connect with my cellphone - after uninstalling the BT software and re-installing it , forcing Windows to accept the Widcomm drivers that came with the device the problem was quickly resolved.

The solution offered in the thread you linked should only affect the BT stack and shouldn't cause any system troubles, but keep in mind we are dealing with Windows so "you never know"!

Hello,

When I wrote the guide I was specifically using the Widcomm BT drivers. Let's try and solve this one. What dongle are you using and what BT drivers?

Let's start from there and work through it.
