CLOSED: X50v (front bezel cracked on right side, damaged LCD ribbon cable)

EDIT: I've repaired my X50v's screen, and am considering whether I want to sell it or my hx4700 instead. Eventually, one of them will be sold, but in a seperate thread.

Mods/admins, if you're listening, could you please delete this thread as it is no longer relevant to my interests?

I thought I was going to get this X50v repaired some day, but I just let it sit around unused...mostly because the LCD ribbon cable eventually became damaged, making the screen unreadable. (The LCD matrix itself seems to be intact, so if you have the ability to repair or replace just the ribbon cable, you could save yourself some money.)

The device is otherwise fully functional. I bought a VGA cable(with direct charger and mini-USB ports, with the USB port also permitting charging capability)to use with it later on, and if you can enable mirror mode on it, you could use it as a makeshift desktop computer with the help of a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

Other accessories include a charger, cradle, documentation, original software discs, and WM5 upgrade discs. Oh, and I'll also throw in a Bluetooth keyboard with a broken hinge for good measure.

Perhaps a price of 120 US$ with all the accessories isn't asking too much. I just need some extra disposable income right now to either replace my current hx4700 with a more functional one(the trackpad on mine just failed, and the backup battery was dead before I bought it), or save up to buy a HP TC1100 Tablet PC that can actually fulfill my demanding requirements regarding Internet browsing, emulation, and a few other things.

I was just wondering how the lcd cable managed to become damaged?

That should be internal....so it might be interesting to hear how that component became damaged.

Just curious.

Perhaps a simple photo that illustrates the issue you are describing.

I'd take a photo right now, but I don't have ready access to my parents' digicam at the moment.

As for a description, the screen when first turned on starts out black in most areas with some white chunks, and then the darker areas gradually brighten. There are several lines running across the screen, some blue, some orange, but absolutely none of it readable.

So, how did it become damaged? The digitizer was acting up at times(horizontal lines look like EKG readouts), so I tried putting some material between the top and bottom edges of the digitizer and bezel as a stickied thread in the X50 Hardware Troubles forum recommended. It didn't quite work out, so I threw the thing across the room. When I picked it back up, the screen looked strange. I seperated the digitizer's metal frame from the LCD and found that the ribbon cable had been torn somehow.

(Okay, I probably shouldn't have thrown the thing in the first place, but it's easy for me to get EXTREMELY frustrated when I can't use the device due to input problems. It's like trying to use your typical desktop computer with a malfunctioning keyboard and mouse! Even that mid-right edge of my hx4700's digitizer, where it registers taps as being much lower than they are, annoys the living hell out of me! Worse off, in my trying to figure out the issue, I must have messed up something with the trackpad, hence why the navigational area refuses to work now.

Perhaps I shouldn't be tinkering inside my devices like this and reducing their value like that, but how else will you learn when the time comes?)

Oh, and about the hx4700-in addition to having a failed trackpad(buttons still work, though)and a not-so-perfect digitizer, the backup battery's dead, which means that the thing hard resets just by removing the main battery. All of these issues make me want to sell or trade it, but I just love the screen quality, broader brightness settings(I can set the backlight quite low for dark environments, and it can automatically adjust itself), and the MASSIVE battery capacity for the device's size(it's slimmer than the X50v or X51v with the stock 1800mAh battery, and barely thicker with the 3600mAh extended battery)!

If only I knew which device to migrate to now...the Sharp Zaurus SL-C3x00 line has a really nice form factor and USB host, but the slower-clocked PXA270 with no GPU assistance of any sort, lack of Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi integrated into the device, and generally high prices put them out of the picture. The HP iPAQ 210/211 is said to have a really nice screen, a battery with even more capacity than the hx4700, USB host, and of course a 624 MHz PXA310, 128 MB of RAM, and Windows Mobile 6...on the other hand, it totally lacks IrDA, and also has a high price tag. The Nokia N810 has a nice WVGA screen and form factor, as well as EXCELLENT browser capabilities, but the PIM and Office document support would be rather lacking. (It doesn't help that I've already sunk a good portion of change into WM software that I don't want to go to waste, such as PocketBreeze, iLauncher, and SoftMaker Office.) Finally, I can do away with this ARM handheld business altogether and treat myself to a HP TC1100, but that means a non-pocketable form factor that would be highly undesirable for music playback(especially since I'll have to sell a lot of extra stuff like my handhelds just to be able to afford one of the cheaper used ones on eBay).

...Great, now I've just made myself a reputation on this forum as "that guy who throws expensive electronic gadgets everywhere". This can't be good. (I haven't thrown my hx4700 yet, though.)

Anyway, I'm thinking about whether or not I should trade them both in for a pristine X50v, all accessories included...after all, I was thinking about stepping up to the X51v and installing something we can't talk about here on it.

I just got an offer from someone who wants to sell me a replacement LCD with an intact cable for a mere 30 US$.

If that goes through, I'll probably call the trade off(seeing that I can probably replace the LCD WITHOUT tearing the cable), though that doesn't mean that I wouldn't be interested in selling both devices so that I could use part of the proceeds toward a perfectly-functional hx4700 and the other part toward my TC1100 savings fund. (And, no, I won't throw either device across the room. Especially not the TC1100.)

$30 is aggressively good.

I sold a couple for $50 (installed). Mine were only for a V model.

I hope your screen works out. Let me know if you need help to swap out the screens. It's really easy.
