Hey guys, great site. I would like to see two improvements. First, the ability to use the DJ as a harddrive that has been stated previously. Second, I would like the ability to select all my tracks and play them randomly without making a playlist of all my tracks.

Thanks

I just got my DJ and already am trolling the boards for help. What I'd like to see is that when you dock your DJ, it shows up as a drive on your PC so that you can just drag & drop your songs into it instead of having to mess around with MusicMatch which I don't find to be very user friendly. :(

Sorry to say, but that will never happen. If you noticed the "Dont steal music" sticker on the screen when you first opened it, YOu know Dell is trying to fight piracy/ promote MM. That would make it too easy to steal music apparantly.....

I know it sucks..... I really wanted that feature too.

Never say never! I won't be surprised if this happens to some degree. You will always have to load a driver in order for the DJ to be recognized (since XP does not have a native driver) but don't be surprised if Dell includes very similar drag and drop functionality like Dudebox has.

Just got my DJ and read a thread regarding the AAC format. If AAC is better quality with smaller file size then it would be nice to have that ability with the DJ. I also would like to see the files lsted in order they appear on the CD...not alphabetically. Go easy on me guys...I'm a newbie.

i dont have a dj because you cant upload audio files onto the computer. I want to record class lectures and then put it on my computer when i get home. This would be a big improvements for all college students.

Those would be my three cheif complaints right there.
1) It does no good as a portable HD if my friends need to install the Dell drivers
2) Scrolling through all of my albums to find the one I want sucks
3) Trying to figure out how to get the voice recordings off my DJ is the quest that brought me here in the first place! (nice forum tho! glad I found it!)

Dunno if anyone else has suggested this yet but...

The one thing I like about listening to long playlists in iTunes is the song blending feature. It'd be nice for the dj to have an option to have perhaps a 0,3,5 sec fade from the end of one song into the beginning of the next. This makes for a nice continuity effect heard on live dj sets. It IS the dell "DJ."

Upgrade Ideas

Hi All,

Here's a copy of a post I placed on the Dell DJ forum at dell.com a few weeks back. I'd love to hear your comments!

Thanks for starting this thread to get some real feedback about the Dell DJ issues and the pending firmware update from those of us who use the product daily. I'm generally very pleased with the product, but I do have a couple of suggestions. I think you'll agree that these small changes will make the player much more user-friendly, and hopefully they will be practical for Dell to implement.

First, the user should have more control of the playlists created on the player. It's difficult to create playlists by first adding the tracks to Selected Music and then saving them as a playlist. Furthermore, once the playlist is created, it's currently not practical to add tracks without deleting the playlist and starting again. Granted, the user can add the playlist and the new tracks to Selected Music and then make a new playlist with everything included, but that process is confusing and after a while, the user's hand will surely begin to cramp. My suggestion is to simplify; include a command in the Artist, Album, Genre, and Track popup menus called Add to Playlist..., which then displays the names of all playlists currently in the player and perhaps a command like Create New Playlist.

Second, why is it not possible to play all the tracks on the DJ without creating a playlist? The user should be able to navigate to all tracks and see a popup menu just like all the other categories (including a Play command!).

Third, browsing should be more context-sensitive. As you know, navigation is presently tree-based, with the Music Library serving as the starting point for all browsing. If the user is listening to a track, and he wants to hear something else by that artist, on that album, or in that genre, he has to navigate back to the Home Page, then to the Music Library, and find the artist, album, or genre (unless he's already in that category, of course). Typically, that's just too many steps. My suggestion is to diversify navigation; include commands in the Track popup menu called View Artist, View Album, and View Genre, which navigates the user to the appropriate lists.

Fourth, I'd have to agree with the majority of users out there that the DJ needs to be more of a typical external USB drive, in terms of displaying it's contents in a My Computer window on a PC while docked without needing the installation CD. I applaud Dell's efforts to curb copyright infringement, but face it, if someone wants to share content between PCs, they'll find another way to do it. Using the DJ as a "ballot-box" device (you can put content in, you just can't get it back out) without 3rd party software only serves to irritate a large majority of the user base. The fact is that if there is a tiny little hard drive in there, then Windows should be able to pick it up as a removable storage device. Period.

Finally I'd have to say the PDA-type features I've heard users discussing aren't particularly necessary, as most of us who really want a PDA will just buy a Pocket PC, notebook, or tablet PC. However, Dell should consider adding a few functional features that would improve the usablility of the DJ as an MP3 player. Having an sleep timer would be nice and would help conserve battery life (I realize there is presently an idle shutdown, but I'm talking about a "sleep" timer like you have on your TV, which shuts off the device -- even if it's playing -- after a specified interval). Providing an option to extend the backlight (perhaps only while plugged in) would also seem sensible to me, especially for users who listen in their cars.

To summarize, I think Dell has provided an excellent product in the DJ. With a couple of modifications, I think it would be even more appealing to users. My wife and I love our Dell DJ's (we have two), and I hope Dell will consider these changes. Please reply if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Thanks!

WHOA!!!!

Is this true?????? And, if so, what format are the voice recordings in when they are extracted??

Anyway...

Things I'd like on the DJ:

-a clock/alarm feature

-no driver-needed hard drive

-more playing options

-ability to play seamless FLAC/SHN audio

Yes, it is true. I tried it before I sold my DJ. The voice recordings are in .wav format.
