I would personally like to see Dell come out with something similar to a flybook.. Perhaps without the GSM connectivity, but I like the idea of a 7-9" touch screen convertible UMPC/Tablet. Here is a better example of what I am thinking of if you aren't familiar with Flybooks.
What Dell needs to make is a tablet pc or a upmc that is almost as small as the axim and is <$500. Dell also needs to continue the Axim line and come out with some device that uses the new Xscale processors.
I'm scheduled to go to the Consumer Electronic Show convention in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks (1/8/07). I wanted to visit the Dell booth to see what they have that might be an improvement to my x50v. The x50v, x51v twins are marvelous but nobody seems to have anything that is an improvement worthy of spending money upon.
If Dell has anything of interest, I'll post it here.
I haven't heard good reports from anyone who has owned or used a tablet PC from any manufacturer yet. I think it may still be a little too new of an idea and the processors strengths have not yet been realized to make it a truly functional idea. The reports I've seen have been pretty similar. The writing recognition engine still lacks alot for the average user. It runs slow due to the need to constantly scan teh screen for input, things like that.
I just wish Dell would continue to work on the Axim line and continue to stay well ahead of the pack in the technology area. I sort of like the idea that my x51v is still pretty well up in the lead bunch of PDAs on the market and it's about the same age or even older than many of the others that have been discontinued.
The UMPC looks nice. They have a model for sale at BestBuy that I looked at the other day. The idea is a good one, but I still need something that I can carry in my pocket at work in the hospital without it weighing me down or causing me to loose my pants.
