I was looking (until I saw the price) at the small Sony laptops (11.4 inch screen or some such small size). I would like such a small screened laptop for portability, and still be powerful enough when connected to a mouse + keyboard + screen and extra peripherals (DVD burner + extra HD) that it would suffice as a good home computer.
I would really like the idea of another Axim model, the x60v sounds cool.
Something advanced for the screen to keep the size down and offer more screen space would be great.
I'm not sure about a tablet, it is sort of a hybrid between a PPC and laptop, and not sure IO I would use it to the advantages of the tablet.
Please, a 7" UMPC with a PC-card slot for a wireless card, a gig of RAM, dual Wifi/Bluetooth, a 60 GB or bigger hard drive (or flash memory, I can always hook an external USB hard drive to when parked at home), a Pentium M or faster, and full support for HID over Bluetooth as well as USB. Place it at less than a grand, and I'd buy it. And, oh yes, 4 USB slots and TV out. :)
I must admit, at first I thought the UMPC is a great idea -- 7" screen and WinXP. But considering it isn't as portable as the Axim nor as versatile and powerful as the M1210... I might have to hold my money until Dell show me the UMPC version of the M1210.
Actually, I'm hoping they'll have them run Vista. It's been released to volume license customers, so Dell should not waste time releasing them with XP.
I would think Dell would bring out a UMPC. The M1210 looks interesting to me since I have a bigger/heavier Dell right now. I've looked at the small Sony's in the stores, and noticed on their website that they have even smaller laptops there, as well as UMPC's.
The UMPC looks interesting but its size doesn't seem that great since you can't put it in a pocket, there isn't any advantage to making it real small, and the price is pretty high too, but if Dell was making them then the prices would probably be half of what Sony is listing them for.
Actually I would think that if Dell made their own version of the smartphone they could do real well with it, but they would have to partner with a couple of the major carriers in order for it to really work. Judging by the number of people who sell their PDA's because "their company bought them a smart phone", Dell would have a good "in" because of their corporate acceptance.
So it seems that Dell has been working on this Tablet PC idea for a couple years now, since it seems to have been rumored since July of '04. (Engadget).
I wonder if this is the reason they got rid of the PDA line. It looks like they want to concentrate on their tablet PCs. And I mean multiple tablets because if this rumor has been going on for this long, it is possible that they may come out with their 12" model still and a UMPC model.
Then again, if it does not come out, possibly rumored, in the spring of '07, we won't see anything for more years to come.
I'm in no rush.
my wife on the other hand...

Your wish came tru a while ago. For $924.71 you can get a ASUS R2H Ultra Mobile PC-Celeron M 900 Mhz 768MB 60GB W/GPS, see the link:
i personally would love Dell to come out with a Tablet.... i currently have a 10.1 inch Acer tablet (the Acer C112), got it my senior year of high school and fell in love with the tablet idea. Mine has great handwriting recognition (better then the Axim in my opinion), 1.1 ghz ULV Intel proc (centrino based tablet). This tablet has sold me on the idea and I hope Dell makes one (they have good laptops, and great priced to boot lol).
I do not like the UMPC idea. While i like the Sony one (forget model but its like UXP280 has specs of my tablet actually), the screens are too small. I would rather have a PDA and a tablet like i have (its 3.3 lbs and can be carried in tablet mode with one hand easily). UMPC is trying too hard to bridge the gap between PDA and tablet, and i think it failed more then the tablet pc "failed".
