| Dell Tablet PC I decided, after a second anonymous tip about Dell in the process of working on a Tablet PC, I would make a forum for it. |

The Asus looks nice ... but some of the reviews i've read opine that it's somewhat underpowered.
Of course, that kinda depends on what you use it for ... but i've seen it for a nice price. Was tempted.
I'd hold out for Dell to make a smartphone or umpc ...

I just hope it's around the 500-800$ mark. If it costs that much it'll sell like crazy.

the only way I would be happy with a tablet PC is if it could house more meatier hardware equivalent to a desktop without needing a huge battery, really would be nice for gfx work... by the time Dell does anything *cough* X50v WM5 A02 upgrade took two years!!! *cough* that tech would be available... 5 years time maybe?

I think I'd rather one of the smaller laptops; but the only one I found recently is the Sony Vaio (they list one on their web site with an 11.4" display.
I think that would be good for home use with an external HD, DVD burner, LCD display (I have a 19" widescreen that is good), and a good keyboard and mouse.
The only thing about the Vaio is the price, but the same problem exists with the UMPCs.
For now, I'm sticking with my Dell Dimension desktop and my X5.

I tried out the Sony Vaio UX UMPC and absolutely loved it. I didn't really get a chance to thoroughyl test it out, but it definately is something on my "if I find some extra cash, I'll buy it" list...
Radio Shack has then for about $1,400 -$1,500 which is the best price I've seen on them.
It's a bit meaty to hold, but the functionality packed into it is pretty impressive. I definately could see myself using something like that for portable network administration and trouble shooting.
Maybe when I get my taxes done... :approve:

I was thinking about the Sony one size bigger than their UMPC:
http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTE...Dept=computers
It has an 11.1" display.

How can a UMPC compete with a small laptop really? (M1210, X1, Vaio UX, W7j)
-it is too big to use like a PDA.
-it is too underpowered (M1210 powered by C2D T7200)
-ALL of them are dead ugly, with the worst being Samsung's.

I don't think it really WOULD compete with a laptop. For me, it would be something to fall between my handheld and my laptop - more capable than my X50V and more portable than my Thinkpad (and all the accessories that I think I need when I use it).
I think I'd be more inclined toward a 7" screen as I'm no spring chicken, and I do want to be able to watch movies on it from time to time. I think it'd be great to have a little PC that I can lean up on its stand and surf and monitor email in the house, out in the garage, or kicked back with a cool one in the lawnchair.
I've always wished my handhelds were more like little PCs. Why not a little PC?

That's what I do with my Dell Latitude X1 when I'm at home. I have a docking station with ext HD, DVD burner, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and large lcd display. The laptop has a 12" screen and is only 2.5lb. It's so light that I sometimes forget I'm carrying it in my little slingpack.
I wouldn't want my PPC to be any bigger than the axim. Otherwise, there's no point to having a pocket pc. Yet, it would be nice if a PPC could keep its form factor, have the performance of an UMPC (e.g., running XP), and still stay under $600. That's my wish for the near future.

If their TabletPC was a direct competitor to the Asus R1F (wacom technology *drools*), same price range (1800-2299$) but with a decent graphics card (not that intel950gma crap ) I'd happily sell my family and kill whoever needs to be killed in order to get one. :hide:

FYI, the Dell displays in CES did not have any tablets or PPCs there. Sony had a small tablet PC, but it was several times larger than an X51v, no where near pocket sized. The HP pavilion had several PPCs there but none had a VGA display, they were all QVGA.
The Pharos display had a GPS Phone 600 device that looks like it might just do it for me. Win Mobile 5, GPS Navigation built-in (of course), WiFi, Bluetooth, open Quad band phone, GPRS/EDGE, FM tuner, 2 mega-pixel camera, 128 mb flash & 64 mb sdram, micro-sd slot. The only bad news is a 240x320 QVGA display but it looked clear enough to read my ebooks on, which is my primary entertainment with a PPC.
