Axim freezing up when opening some e-books

Some recently installed e-books will cause my Axim X50(416) to freeze up. Not all e-books do this and I have tried re-installing the e-books but the problem persists.

Any ideas what is causing my problems?

If you are using MSReader, you should to make sure you have the latest version. One of the older versions of MSReader took forever to open some ebooks on my X50V.

Thanks for the replies but...

I have the most current version of activesync (2.4) but have reinstalled it anyway.
I have tried reinstalling the e-books.
I tried doing a soft reset on the Axim (actually I have to when the e-book hangs)
I though book size may matter but there seem to be a weak correlation at best.
Examples: the book "Ideas" @ 1.80 Megs does not open well
The book "Ben Franklin" @567 KB opens with no problems
The book "Sick Puppy" @343 KB does not open well
The e-books in question will often hang if I navigate to Microsoft Reader and open the book from the library.
The books seem to open better by navigating to the e-book file and opening the e-book by clicking on it (but it is not 100%)

Previously, I stored the books on a CF card, I tried storing the problem books in main memory, but this seems to have little effect when opening from library of Microsoft Reader.
The books do seem to open somewhat better when installed in main memory and the e-book is opened by navigating to the individual file.

Again I appreciate you advice.

When you reinstalled MSReader, did you uninstall the copy on your PDA first? My version of MSReader is 2.4 (build 5070) and am not having any problems opening the books on my X50V with it. One other question, are both the books you mentioned DRM (if so, it could be an activation issue) books or is one open source?

I did uninstall MSreader first and I have the same version and build as you. The problem e-books do have lit extension.
I moved these e-books to main storage and they seem to be working better but only when I open the e-book file. When I open MS reader first, the e-books still freezes.
While not ideal, at least I can read e-books now.

It might be worth considering getting rid of MS reader altogther, and using ConvertLit so you can read the books in another reader like Mobipocket or µbook...

FSMAN:

Please try the following:

Cradle your device
Open activesync
Open add/remove programs in activesync
Uncheck MSReader and click Remove in the Remove All section (this part is REALLY important it removes the cached install)Soft reset your device
Go to the MSReader website and install the latest version of Reader.
Attempt to open a book.

If you continue to see issues please reply back to me here and I will do my best to assist you further.

NOTE: Many users uninstall just by unchecking MSReader in add/remove. This is different than Remove in Remove All section. The Remove all removes the cached installtion files that are used to restore your installtions should you have to hard reset your device. If you do not remove all the old Reader will be installed.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Thanks Christine
I think I followed your instructions but still the problem e-books freezes when I open them from MSReader/libary. I seem to be able open them by navigating to the e-book file and selecting from there. But still I wonder why I am unable to open them directly from MSReader.

Fsman:

If that is the case it could be a problem with your litpath file. This is the file that tracks the location of your file so that it is easier for Reader to find it next time. It is a hidden file so you will need to use activesync to work with it. You might give the following a try:

Cradle your device
Sync to your desktop
In activesync click on explorer
Go to Tools | folder options | view
Choose show all hidden files
Choose shall all system files
Choose show all file extensions
Close folder option box
Navigate via explorer to the location of your .lit files
Find the litpath.lpt file
Delete it
Double click on one of your titles
Close the title
Open the Reader
Attempt to open the same title used in the previous step

Please Let me know if this doesn't resolve this issue and we can look into this further.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Its been awhile but I am still unable to view many ebooks. I believe I have followed msreadergirl's direction.
Could there be a problem with my AXim?
