The developer's stating that he won't be releasing a version for palm platforms. µbook reads palm formats just fine (plain pdb, and unencrytped eReader and Mobipocket).

Why would that stop you from trying the demo?

If I already know I won't buy, why try?

Back to mobipocket and scrolling. I couldn't really remember why I didn't like ereader and isilo's autoscrolling so I went back and read a book on each of them. As far as I can tell mobipocket is the only one that allows you to start autoscrolling with a button and allows you to speed up and slow down the autoscrolling with jog dial or you can program your own buttons.

From my view, autoscroll is pretty worthless if you can't speed it up and slow it down. There is more and less white space in an area and the text can be more and less difficult to read and comprehend. A constant speed auto scroll means you have to always set it to run a little slower than you actually read.

Have you seen this

"Regarding iSilo's auto-scrolling, your must be referring to a very old version. I have one hard button set up to toggle auto-scrolling on/off. When on, the D-Pad up/down buttons accelerate or slow down the auto-scrolling. My version is 4.26 but the auto-scroll feature exists since early 4.0 revisions at least. The lastest version is 4.29."

I have version 4.27. I finally figured it out. So Mobipocket and iSilo are even on my list. Note that for both versions you have to have the pay version to do the autoscroll.

I guess that's true. I just don't understand the initial attitude. Lots of people sell useful things without an official privacy policy and I prefer to give small businesses the benefit of the doubt. There seems to be a really minimal risk to sending someone cash through PayPal. It's probably safer than giving your credit card to some kid in a pizza shop!

If it is the right product for you, there is certainly a way to get it without revealing the location of your secret mountaintop laboratory. You could have a friend buy it for you, for example. Unless you refuse to do business with the uBook guy on principle.

I'm only being argumentative because uBook is an AWFULLY good program and is drives me crazy to see you dismiss it so quickly. You should contact the author. He might post a privacy policy, or otherwise reassure you, and then you'd have another software option.

I appreciate it and agree that I could have contacted the author long ago. That thought crossed my mind a couple of times but then it seemed like an avoidable "effort", because between iSilo and RepliGo I already have the functionality that I need. I simply did not have enough incentive to buy or act.

My security concerns are not about the transaction as such but about data storage. I do not want to have my credit card info stored on any more systems if I can avoid it. The thought of having it stored on some unsecured small business PC simply worries me. I have seen enough of those. PayPal had its own security problems.

BTW, I would not have a secret mountaintop lab. If I had a lab it would be underground, earthquake- and nuke-proof. ;)

OK, I get it. Though with PayPal, the merchant doesn't get your CC number... PP is the middleman and they keep that data to themselves. But if you have bad feelings about PP, you are certainly in good company. :) I'll be quiet now.

Here's the link to the last free version of U-book.
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=595

EDIT: Oops! They put a note that it (version .9) is not freeware anymore. The link used to give you version .8. I don't know if they got rid of .8, or if that one is still it. Only a download will tell.

Ungluud, the download link at PocketPCFreewares still points to uBook version 0.8o ... which, as you pointed out, is the last free version of uBook.

Although, there is nothing wrong with buying a license for the latest version and supporting development of this wonderful program ...

Mobipocket has just had a redesign in version 5. It's much faster and looks excellent on VGA devices :approve:
