Ox is correct! There is an updated Microsoft Reader version now posted on the Reader website. This version fixes the known issues with WM 5.0 activation and gives users the ability to install Reader to their removable media while retaining their ability to activate without the need to copy files.

There have been some misunderstandings regarding installation and I wanted to make sure that I posted the complete steps for uninstalling MS Reader from your system (both PPC desktop component and PPC add/remove programs component). Please follow these steps prior to installing the new version of Reader:

On the desktop go to Control Panel | add/remove programs
Find the Microsoft Reader for PPC install entry
Click on modify/uninstall
Close add/remove and control panel

Cradle device
Open ActiveSync and sync the device
Go to Tools | Add/Remove programs
Select the Reader and go to the Remove all section at the bottom
Click remove
Once the release has disappeared from the program listing close the
add/remove programs dialog
Go to http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.asp
Click on the setup.exe
Choose "run" and follow the install instructions.
Attempt to activate

When you look at your version (Found in Reader Settings | About Microsoft
Reader) you should see 2.4.1 (build 5323).

Also note that if you have a ROM installed Reader you should hold off on upgrading Reader until we have defined work around steps in order to assure ease of use.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Yes, but please note that while the Reader can be installed to a media location the Activation CAB file must be installed to the default or Device location and cannot be installed to the SD or CF card in order for activation to work sucessfully.

Msreadergirl,

I hate to flame you here, specially since you were brave and courteous enough to expose yourself in public here, but IMO MSReader is one of the most incompetent pieces of garbage software I have ever dealt with and it seems inexcusable since it's software developed by MS for their own platform. Most third party Alfa software is more functional. I have used and tried using MSReader for several years and although it claims to be "FREE", it has been extremely costly in terms of wasted time and frustration. When I first installed in on my Dell Axim X50V and activated it, for some inexplicable reason several of my books would hang or take almost half an hour to open if at all. after one of my ROM updates, I reinstalled it, but this time MS refused to allow me to activate it, since, apparently, I had exceeded my alloted activations. That left me with a library of .LIT books that could not be read on my PDA(at least I could still read them on my PC). Eventually MS upgraded MSReader to resolve the inoperability I had been experiencing. After installing the upgrade, Bill Gates, so kindly allowed me another activation. All this brings me to today where I currently have a version of MSReader that at least somewhat works (within it capabilities with it's incompetent programing). I don't dare upgrade for fear of reliving the nightmares I've had with this product and making my unread books once again useless on my PDA.

My recommendation to others is simply to NEVER buy any book in the .LIT format. There are numerous competent readers out there for other formats.

I need help. I just downloaded the Microsoft Reader 2.4.1

Prior to downloading it, I uninstalled the older version. I downloaded the new version witrh no problem. When I tried to activate it, I got a message that said:

Activation Error
You have an older version of Pocket PC which does not support Activation. Activation requires Pocket PC 2002 or later.

Now, I DO have Pocket PC 2002 or later. What is the problem here? I tried rebooting my Pocket PC. I tried deleting my temporary Internet files....no luck. Help?

AtticusFinch:

Have you tried the following steps for removing any previous installations?

Removal from Desktop (Important!)
  1. Open Control Panel | Add/remove programs on your desktop
  2. Find the entry for Microsoft Reader for PPC
  3. Delete this entry
  4. Close Add/remove programs and control panel
Removal from PPC(Important!)
  1. Cradle your device
  2. Wait for the syncronization and open add/remove programs in activesync
  3. Select Microsoft Activation (if you have it) and Click on Remove from the Remove all section at the bottom of the dialog (Very Important!)
  4. Select Microsoft Reader and Click on Remove from the Remove all section at the bottom of the dialog (Very Important!)
  5. Close add/remove programs
  6. Run Reader setup for 2.4.1
  7. Run Activation
  8. Attempt to open DRM protected title
If you continue to see this error message look for the hidden file udhid.dll and verify that it is in the \windows directory. This is the file that activation looks for to validate the operating system.

If you continue to have issues after this please contact me offline and I will do my best to help you resolve this important issue.

Sincerely.

Thank you for the review! I would like to add that this release was not intended to be a major functionality release (hence the "updated") it is intended to resolve the WM 5.0 issues and fix the SD card installation issues that seemed to be a big issue for many of our customers. So your synopisis of who should install is right on the money.

Thank you so much for your feedback!

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Christine, thanks for coming here to talk to the users. I personally am always impressed when devs do so, it means they do give a damn.

Personally I used to use MSReader often (haven't used a PocketPC for quite a while, getting an x51v now though) and for the most part enjoyed it. Hopefully this new version will be a nice addition to my x51v when it arrives.

I am having a problem while exiting MS 2.4.1 reader through a couple different task switchers (not closing, as in leaving it run in the background)

My X50v (WM2003) hangs for about 1 minute!!

It's installed to my CF card, it's a fast card.

My activation is in /Windows.

I don't use font on storage. What could it be?

Update:

I uninstalled MS reader again and installed it to BIS instead. I also snagged a fresh Activation instead of copying one from a previous device.

I am starting with 29 MB free RAM.

It still takes a good minute or so to get my device back, that is, it's locked up. I check my processor speed, it's at 624 despite being in the "AUTO" mode.

Should I look forwared to 2.4.2?

Meanwhile, I'm turning OFF my "close on X" feature of SPB Pocket Plus.
