I have used ereader from when I had a palm, and I was able to switch all my books over to my Axim. Please enjoy the free ebooks and use the free ereader. There is also a reader upgrade you can pay for, but I have never felt the need. Here is the link to the free books-- a new one every day! Collect them all!

Every time Ereader gives away books we have this same arguement. They require a credit card because their DRM is tied to a credit card number. Nothing is charged, but the number is used to unlock the DRM. I know we would all love it if there were no DRM but almost all ebooks have some type of DRM. Ereader at least allows you to reactivate on a number of devices and allows you to change the DRM. Overall it is a pretty easy system. If you don't want DRM or you don't want to give your credit card then you can't download the books. It is as simple as that.
I personally like the free books and have downloaded around 60+ over the past several years of free book give aways.
