Solution: How to read DRM Adobe PDFs on your Axim

I recently received an email about a new book by one of my favorite authors from Amazon. The first thing I did was go to eReader to see if it was released for my PPC. They had the book for $15. Since I don't normally pay that much for an eBook, I also looked on Amazon. They had it as an Adobe DRM PDF for $10, so I bought it. That's when the headaches began. After much reseach here and elsewhere, I found that most people couldn't read the DRM PDF on their PPC. Fortunately, someone on the Adobe forum found a solution a couple of months ago, so I thought I'd pass it on....

.... Start of forum message ....
For the Adobe "Permission to use this document has expired" error message on your PDA:

This one was a long battle. I have NO clue why using the VGA mode takes care of this message, so I did an experiment. Turned on VGA mode, the file opened fine. Turned off VGA mode, the file gave me that silly Permission has expired message. So, yep, it's the VGA mode. Not a clue how or why. Here is how the issue was finally laid to rest on my device....

1) Make sure your Desktop and PDA Adobe Readers have been authorized first.
2) Delete the PDF e-book that is giving you issues from your PDA. In Windows mobile 2003, You are most likely to find it at: Start -> Program Files -> File Explorer -> My Device -> My documents -> My Digital Editions.
3) Re-boot your PDA just in case.
4) Download SE_VGA from Pocket Gear:
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14679
5) Unzip the file. Please note that the unzipped file will not open on your desktop PC, only on your PDA. You must place it in the folder that you use to sycronize files using Active Sync to transfer this file into the PDA.
6) Find file you just transfered, and open it. Follow the prompts to install it. Open the VGA program, and select: "Real VGA!" next to "Select Resolution".
7) Click "Apply Changes", and re-boot your PDA.
Connect your PDA to your computer via Activesync.
9) Open Adobe Reader, go to: File ->Digital Editions -> "My Digital Editions". Select your e-book, or use "Add file" to browse for it. Click on Send, and on the dialog box that pops up click on "Prepare".
10) The e-book should not transfer, and when it's done it should work.

Please note that on my computer, when Adobe transfers the book to my PDA it takes about an hour. The program a lot of times goes white, an even says "Not Responding" at the top a lot of times. However this is because I wastransfering a 700+ page book, and as long as I left it alone to do it's thing the e-book was on my PDA after an hour.

Really hope this helps somebody out. Now, I shall go get some much needed sleep. Night, all!
.... End of Forum Message ....

It worked for me. It means a couple of extra steps, but at least you can read your purchased DRM's on you PPC now!
Good luck!
