Had an X5 for a couple of years, no major problems - now reader keeps losing access to the ebook every 10 or so pages, have to click on library, and reopen the book.

Any thoughts?

Any word on when we can expect a stable upgrade from Dell? the x51v seems much less reliable than my old X5.

I too have been very unhappy with my X51v / WM5 combination. Same problems. I use my PDA primarilly as an ebook reader ... all the other functionality are nice to have extras. Tried other readers, same problems or worse. I have shelved the x51v it to go back to my older X5. I am not sure if all the problems are with the hardware or the newer WM5. Where ever it is, it is a show stopper for me.

I just installed MS Reader on my X51v and cannot activate it. I am getting a message that says I have an older version of reader which does not support activation.

I verified that I am installing the correct version. It is installed to the device... I vaguely recall having this problem before or seeing it mentioned before but I don't recall what the answer was. I have tried a soft reset as well and that didn't help.

There are 3 reasons why the "you have an older OS" error is present.

1. The OEMinfo.xml file is not present in the \windows directory (if your device provider doesn't have this file email msreadergirl@comcast.net to get a copy)
2. The udhid.dll file is not present in the \windows directory (which should not happen if you are indeed installing 2.4.1)
3. You have a cached install of the 2.4 or earlier Reader.

The following instructions will check for each of those. Please give the following a try:

On your device go to Start | Settings | System Tab | Remove Programs. Select Microsoft Reader and tap on "Remove"

<NOTE: If you can't remove these files via this method on your device:

On your device please go to My Device\Windows\AppMgr and remove any folders named Microsoft Reader
On your device please go to where your Microsoft Reader is installed and delete the entire folder
>
On your device please go to the \windows directory and delete udhid.dll
On your device please delete your annotations folder and any hidden files named litpath.lpt
Soft Reset your device, DO NOT PLACE IN CRADLE

On your PC please go to Start | Control Panel | Add/remove programs and select "Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC" and uninstall it
On your PC please go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync and remove the folder Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC
On your PC go to your device activesync folder (usually named something like Mydevice_MyDocuments and lives on your desktop)
From this folder and any subfolders delete any .EBO files or hidden litpath.lpt files
Cradle your device and let it sync
On your PC Open Activesync
Open Add/Remove programs in activesync
Verify that the Microsoft Reader is not listed in the list of applications
If it is still listed go to Start | Run and type in regedit or regedit32 if it is an NT based system.
Go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\AppMgr\Apps
Delete the key for Microsoft Reader
Open Activesync
Open Add/Remove programs in activesync
Verify that the Microsoft Reader is not listed in the list of applications
Soft reset the device and recradle

Install the 2.4.1 version of the Reader (you will know that you have the right version during install when you get to the licensing agreement - the
version is listed there)
Complete the install and DO NOT RESET at the end of the install
Attempt to activate directly after Reader installation. NOTE: Install only to the Device/Default location. Failure to do so will result in further issues.
If activation is successful perform a soft reset to register the fonts.

If activation is not sucessful please reply back and I will do my best to assist you further.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Same problem here. I was about to recommend MS Reader to a friend with an X51V and I can no longer do that. There is some bug with WM5 that keeps stuffing up the application.

Even worse, if you disregard the "no access to the book" message. An application restart will not even work. You get a message that states "msreader is not a valid ppc application." You cannot restart the application without a soft reset.

You would think with MS making the application, MS licensing the .lit format, and MS making the operating system they could fix the problem, but alas, no. They can't seriously think someone else is to blame, can they?

What's up with this MSReaderGirl???

LateOtt:

The bit that is likely hanging you up is the presence of older litpath.lpt files and .ebo files. This usually happens if you have bulk copied or done a sync with previously read books to your new device. The instructions have to be followed very carefully and in order. First while your device is NOT cradled you must clear all .EBO files and all copies of the hidden file litpath.lpt from your device and storage cards. These files will hold path placeholders to locations that may not exist on your newer device. Then go to your PC (with the device still NOT cradled) and look in your device activesync folder (usually named something like MyDevice_MyDocuments and lives on your desktop) remove all .EBO files and copies of the hidden file litpath.lpt from this directory and all subdirectories as well. Once you have done this soft reset your device and start Reader. This may take awhile as it will need to rebuild your library with the new locations.

In regard to the "not a valid application" error this is a known issue and can be resolved by following these instructions -

1. Install an application like Resco Explorer and when you tap on the file the registry will be repaired for you by answering a series of questions.
2. You can edit the PPC registry via a 3rd party registry tool and edit these entries -

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\eBook\shell\Open\Command\
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\eBookEBO\shell\Open\Command\

Inside the string value you will need to add quotes around the path to msreader.exe but NOT %1

If this does not resolve your situation please feel free to reply back and I will do my best to assist you further.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Aside from my earlier comment about the font sizes being stupid on vga devices I have a similar problem to others here.

When reading a book one thing you are likely to do is put the Axim into standby and it is this that looses the "connection" to any book that is on a storage card. It seems that on my X51v when it come out of standby the X51v scans the SD and CF cards to ensure that they are the same cards and so blocks MS Reader for a second or two which causes it to "loose" the book even though it is still available. You can read a couple of pages further than you were before the standby, but then it comes up with an error saying that it cannot find the book.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this, besides putting the book in "My Documents"? These are the two showstoppers as far as using MS Reader is concerned. I really would like to use MS Reader as I prefer it to almost all other book readers but this makes it barely useable to me.

Mokubai:

You might give the instructions I gave to LateOtt. We have discovered that many of these types of issues are related to the way that Reader stores the paths in the litpath.lpt and annotatations files. If you didn't delete these files before switching over to your X51v you may see behavior such as you describe because it is looking for these files in a different location as it is using the old mapping. By deleting the litpath.lpt file you force the device to remap the storage locations and recognize the new mappings.

Please let me know if this does not resolve your issue as I would like to investigate further to see if we can find a timely resolution to your issue in our lab.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Christine, thanks for the quick reply. I've done what you asked and deleted the litpath.lpt file but it was in the root directory of the device rather than the "\My Documents" folder so I don't see that it could have been synchronised with an older copy.

It seems to have mostly fixed the problem, I'm not constantly loosing the books after putting the unit into standby, but it still happens sometimes (about 1 time in 8) and I can't find a way to replicate it consistantly. All I can say now is that *sometimes* coming out of standby Reader will be unable to find the book.

I'm not really sure if this is a Reader problem any more, it seems to possibly be an issue with the X51 taking a while to re-recognise the storage card when coming out of standby.

Is there anything else I can do to help you diagnose this?

Thanks for your help Christine.

Is this the only reason I cannot read my old ebook? I had an old Toshiba PDA and I just purchased the X41V. After I installed the new Reader and activate it (using a new account as my old account exceeds the quota). I can't read my books.

I tried to create my own ebook by using the Word Add-in and I got the same error message from Reader. Any help thanks?

Satboy13:

Please go to http://das.microsoft.com/activate/en...traDefault.asp to request extra activation quota. Once you have done that it can take anywhere up to 72 hours to have this granted. If you have not received your grant within that time please contact me offline so that I can escalate the issue.

You will be unable to use your old titles unless you are using your original account.

MS Reader ISSUES?
Hi all

I am currently using MS-Reader 2.4.1 on my Axim X51v, and have the following problems

1. when reading an ebook I click for the next page and it hangs it will not go to the next page... ==> Soft Reset
2. When I try and close MS-Reader because of the above mentioned problem then it only goes to the Today screen and will not close, if I try and reopen it from the top bar (using wisbar advance) it will not open... ==> Soft Reset
3. Some times if I try and open MS-Reader either from
a. Start > Programs > MS-Reader
b. SPB Pocket Plus > MS-Reader
c. SPB Menu > Programs > MS-Reader
It comes up with an error saying something like It is not a known application, can't really remember the actually message... ==> Soft Reset

Has this happened to anyone else, or does anyone know how to fix this, as I read ebooks a lot and having to reset my Ax every so often sux...

Cheers

Jace

Do you have MS Reader installed to main memory or SD or CF card? If it is not installed in main memory then reinstall it there.

Also, to avoid MS reader flakiness, you may want to copy your books to main memory too, MS reader is the worst at dealing with the unit going into standby and the card being unavailable for a second or two when you come out of standby....
