Well, Microsoft won't give me any more activations, although it's been over 6 months since my last activation. In a short 2 year time span I had my work computer changed twice. Once, I changed jobs to a new office and I was given a new machine. Shortly thereafter, I had a sceduled system refresh and was given a new and improved system. Just work comuters alone ate up 3 of my activations.
PDA's ate up the other half. I did conserve my activations on the PPC, but I still used 3. First, work gave my a very old HP Jornada which I activated. I liked the PDA so much I wanted to buy my own that had BT and Wifi. Enter the x30H. Of course I had it replaced once, but I used the trick on this forum and didn't burn an activation. Then came my x50v. Love it and activated it. Another activation down the tubes. Now the next activation was my fault. I didn't save the activation on my x50v so I when I had to replace it because of a faulty SD reader, I was forced to activate a second x50v.
Anyway that alone leaves me at 6 activations. I did contact them once for activations because I changed my home computer about 2 years ago. It was Christmas 2004.
Anyway, I jsut built myself a new computer this February and now I can't activate it. Microsoft won't let me have any additions to my quota. I thought that you got a new one every sixmotnhs, but that was juat a rumor, I guess.
The part that bothers me the most about all this is the fact it doesn't stop or even make illegal downloading any harder. In fact, the only problems that arise for me surround the legal books I spend hard-earned money on. I want to purchase Stephen King's Cell so that I may read it on my x50v. Because I can't activate my computer this can't be done. Guess what? It is now easier, cheaper, and more convenient for me to find a free copy.
Way to go Microsoft! You're actually in a way encouraging those of us that "want" to pay the authors for their work to go download non-DRM copies because of analness with activations.
Anyone have any experience getting the sellers to recognize a second activation account? I buy almost all my books from Fictionwise and ebooks.com.

This is why I don't use MS reader any more. The DRM scheme for ereader and paperbackdigital are much better. But even better is Baen that doesn't use a DRM scheme.
By the way, a little off point, a study that I saw last week said that DRM on music uses between 8 and 25 percent more battery than just plain mp3 files.

Tiger_Splash:
When you say that you were denied addtional quota what do you mean? Did you actually get a message that says that you were denied when you submitted for addtional quota? If you are willing to chat with me about your activation details I can look into why you were given the denied message. You should be receiving one new quota each 180 days. If this is not happening we want to know about it so that we can fix it.

I had problems getting an additional activation. I sent the email, waited 2 weeks and never heard anything. I finally called MS support, got transferred around 3 times, finally got someone to set up a case for me and forwarded me to another support person, who forwarded the case to the activation dept. They said it would take up to 72 hours to process, it was about 24 hours. They also gave a followup call and email to be sure I was able to activate my Axim. :approve:
I was turned down, but it was a couple of years ago. I went back and tried to activate today and I could. But because of the activation problem I switched to another reader and while I am happy I can get access to the content I paid for I doubt I will every buy anything in MS Reader format in the future. I like Mobipocket much better. Even ereader has a better authentication scheme.
Is it hard-resets with new profiles created that causes this problem?
Personally, I use baen.com for most of my MSReader content BTW.

It is more likely that it is a server side issue. Unless we have a customer to track that is experiencing the issue it is difficult to see where the break is. With a customer repro we can look at their activation data and see which scenarios are not being covered and alter our processes to make sure that they are.
If you have any questions please let me know and I will be do my best to assist.
I have been using RS Reader since I got my first Axim an X5 and now after 3 years I have had no issues with activation. Off topic but Christine are there plans to update MS reader anytime soon? I actually like MS reader but the one thing that does irritate me is that I have over 300 e-books on a CF card and I have to use Total Commander to easily look for a book. Folders within MS reader would be soooooooo nice.
