reading fatigue

how fatiguing to you find reading off your axim? what about a laptop? a book? can you read for hours on a pda without feeling fatigued? i'm just curious. i really like the idea of having lots of books on an axim, but i tend to find it more difficult on my eyes; perhaps displays just haven't quite got to the point of being really readable for me

anohter thing i find (more with websites than literature), is that i tend to want to scan an entire page, not scroll through a list slowly. my eye might pick out a picture and draw me to that section, rather than having to go word by word. like is said though, this is less of an issue with text

on the other hand, when i read text fast i find myself needing to scroll almost constantly. problem with that of course is that i get that blur which i find very fatiguing.

my main problem with reading is that my left eye is "lazy". left to it's own it will drift off to the outside (left); i may possibly have surgery for it in the future, but for now it's a tad too risky. when i get that blur of text, my left eye has a harder time staying focused as it doesn't have something static to concentrate on.

thoughts?

I can read for a good while without problems. A couple hours. I rarely have time to read more than 30 minutes at a time though. I know I used to read for hours at a time with paper, but life changes.

I agree that things could be better with scrolling. I use auto scroll, which I think it a great tool, but it does strain the eyes more than just scrolling page by page. I do think that some programs do better than others and obviously some screens are better than others.

I would play with text sizes and see if that helps. I have tried to make things as small as possible to get the most text I can into a screen, but then I upgraded to a x51v and I can't read the smallest possible text on a VGA screen. But others find it easier to have the text larger than normal and a faster scrolling speed.

I find that not only text size matters, but background color and brightness. I like the readers that let me choose a background color other than the bright white of MS Reader, and I like to change the brightness depending on the lighting - too bright in a dark room is hard on my eyes. I also seem to do better scrolling manually, autoscroll is fine for a while but then I need to go back to the "old fashioned" way!

I also find settable colours helps a lot (I use MobiPocket): black background, yellow letters. I also disabled ClearType as I find that it makes the text blurrier.

I'm in my mid 50s. While I can read the Axim without glasses, I find that I can read longer with less fatigue with a pair of reader glasses. If you don't wear glasses, you might want to try a pair of low power readers. If you do wear glasses, ask your doc for a reading perscription.
