Looking for Ubook guide

Sorry guys, again IPAQ user but MobilitySite has less users than this one and ubook seems to be universal to ppc.

Tried reading the ubook help and searching this forum but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to undo highlighting/annotations and bookmarks. Not to mention, I don't know how to access these features.

What does bookmarking and annotations do? and any recommended settings for ubook?

Maybe there's an option to start from somewhere else in the txt file other than the page last read?

I'm guessing here as I don't use the product, but the website suggests a popup menu:
  • Select the highlighted text
  • Hold the stylus down
  • A pop-up menu should appear - tap highlight to remove the highlight
Bookmarks and annotations are great ways to return to a reading point or making notes about what you are reading (think margin notes in a real book).

Thanks. But I still don't know how to use the bookmarks and annotations. Other than a dashed box around the highlighted text.

I tried the tip but the highlight remained there but maybe it's for annotations or something else because it eventually changed the highlight color of the text. I'm sure strike through doesn't undo itself when repeated because the line is still there so I thought the same for highlighting.

If you are using the latest version of uBook, you can select text by pressing down with the stylus and dragging to the right (or down, or up) and the text you selected will be highlighted. When you lift your stylus off the screen, a pop-up menu will appear, with options like "Bookmark", "Highlight", "Strike", etc. Choose whichever option you want to use. "Bookmark" leaves a box around the selected text, "Highlight" actually highlights the text, "Strike" strikes out the selected text, etc. There is also an option in this pop-up menu to "Lookup" the definition of the selected word, if you have a dictionary installed and you've configured it in the uBook options.

Note: if you tap twice on a word, it will select the whole word and display the pop-up menu automatically.

If you want to remove an annotation, tap on it once and the pop-up menu will appear with an option (second from the top) to "Delete". This deletes the annotation, not the actual text.

To actually use your annotations, you will need to use the arrow symbols at the bottom of the uBook window. How these arrow symbols appear will depend on which skin you are using. If you are using the default uBook skin, across the bottom of the window you will see something like this:

<<<< <<< <: <<14/66>> :> >>> >>>>

The "14/66" in the center indicates you are on page 14 of 66 total pages. The double arrows >> to either side of the numbers are to go forward or back one page. The single arrow and colon :> are to go forward or back one chapter (if your document has chapters). The triple arrows >>> are to go forward or back through your annotations. This is the function I believe you are looking for. The four arrows >>>> are to go forward or back through your recent documents.

I know the interface on uBook is not the most polished, but once you get used to these features, it can be a very powerful reader for you.

Hope this helps!

Bookmark and annotations can be deleted but not highlights and strike through.

The "ebook" arrows have only one <<14/66>> arrows and when I tried the "simple" skin, despite the multiple arrows, only two appear to be clickable, the < > keys and << >> keys.

Clicking on the other arrows treat them as clicking the << arrows. Could it be due to something I changed in the options?

I'm using the 9.h demo right now but I'm planning to uninstall it for the last free version of ubook.

Also how do you change the skin? I downloaded one of the skins but when opened through ubook, it results into images of the skin (ibook I think) instead of applying the skin.

Finally, is there an annotations and bookmarks manager view to see where all the bookmarks and annotations are?

Turns out the default skin (bookstart) has more options than the other skins. Are there tutorials for the other skins? I prefer ebook, windows and simple over bookstart.

Yes, not all skins are created equal. I use the fabulous "Day" and "Night" skins by Robert A. Fowler. They have all the features, including the arrow symbols to scroll through your annotations. The "Day" skin provides excellent contrast for daytime reading and the "Night" skin allows nighttime reading with a minimum of glare (it's easy on the eyes). And I can easily select between these two skins by taping on the time clock at the top right of the skin (several of the skins have this feature).

Also, I have no trouble deleting any type of annotation (bookmark, hightlighting, strikeout). Just a single tap on the annotation brings up the pop-up menu with the second option on the menu being "delete". I've tested this on the latest version and on the last free version without any problems.

Finally, version 0.9i is now out.
