If you're referring to using Microsoft's RMR (Read in MS Reader) plugin -- yes -- it does not strip out the excess "Office" tags before creating the LIT file, so the file is larger than it need be, and takes longer for Reader to open.

Try Overdrive ReaderWorks (it's free), I've converted several Word documents to .lit and they seem to work just fine without any abnormal delay and it also supports HTML docs as well.

Also try LitSprout, they have several freeware LIT tools. I don't do LIT anymore, so no, I don't have any personal experience with any of their stuff.

Here's a tip when using any of the LIT generators (OverDrive, etc.):

If using Word, first save the document as a "Filtered Web Page" which will strip out all the excess MS tags. I think there are other apps out there that can further clean up the mess that Word makes out of X/HTML but Save As... Web Page, Filtered is a good start to shortening the overall size of the book.

Personally, I'd suggest using a different format altogether. I'm not a Microsoft basher by any means, but I tend to draw the line at Reader -- it's atrocious. I'm not much of a MobiPocket fan either (yet anyway) but it sounds like you're making your own LIT books, so you'll be able to use those same source files to create a PRC for MobiPocket for free too. At least it's faster all-around and more configurable than Reader.

I've made several e-books from MSword, and have come up with a couple of rules that make opening them quicker.

1. Always use a custom cover, sized correctly for your handheld screen. It seems the default cover MS wants you to use is too large, and your PDA has to take some time to resize it.

2. At the end of every chapter, place a page-break. I think MSreader repaginates your ebook every time you open it, but it only seems to start from the last page break. If I leave off reading at the first page of a chapter, my ebooks open almost instantaneously when I reopen them. If I read 10~20 pages into a chapter, there is a short delay, but not nearly as long as if I've read almost to the end of a book without any page-breaks. In that case I often wait a couple minutes before it finishes opening.
