Can't download free e-books from Microsoft

Hi,

Downloaded and installed the newest version of Microsoft Reader (2.2.2 Build 3143), reactivated it after the instalation, and when trying to download free ebooks from their site it says 'Download Error'
What have I done wrong...? And thanks in advance :)

are you sure you activated it? Does it say your Email Address at the bottom when you open Microsoft Reader?

Yes, it says 'Activated for (my email address here)' at the bottom. Any ideas?

No I don't have any ideas, but I'm in the same boat. I downloaded the MS reader that came with my Axim and then activated it. Went to Amazon and bought an ebook. When I attempted to download, Amazon site said that my reader wasn't activated. I checked. It is. I re-installed reader and then tried to activate it but it said it was already activated.
Back to the Amazon site its the same; "you must download the latest version of MS reader...."
My hard drive then nuked itself (I doubt it due to my attempts to reload ms reader) and I'm currently waiting for a new hard drive to install.

and all I wanted to do was read a book during my lunchhour....

It even asked me if I want to over-write the activation, I chose 'yes' and I still can't download ebooks...

I had problems with the reader myself originally. I had downloaded the latest version and then installed it on my CF card. Upon checking the version it was still showing the older version. I unloaded it and then when it installed I let it install in the default directory. This updated the version correctly. Then after activating it, I was able to go to the Settings and check the About and see that it was 2.2.2. It does not seem to be able to update correctly if it get loaded into a storage card. A older copy is still in the windows folder and you cannot seem to be able to repoint it to the new one on the storage card.

I haven't got any storage cards (yet :) ) and it shows my copy as 2.2.2. Also when I installed it, it asked whether to overwrite my files in the windows folder - I chose 'yes to all'

When you try to download Ms ebooks, do you download to your desktop PC? Have you updated and activated the desktop version of the reader?

I download the books to the reader on my desktop and then just copy the file from My Documents\My Library to the Axim.

I also had the problem that after installing reader on a SD card the shortcut in Programs was not updated. By updating the shortcut to point to the new reader it works fine.

I try to download it straight to my Axim, it's in cradle. I haven't got reader installed on my desktop PC.

I don't think it's possible to download the books directly to the Axim, doesn't work here either. Try installing the reader on your desktop and I'm sure it will work.

Did anyboby notice that you can't download the free M$ ebooks with Netscape Navigator???
I copy (ctrl-c) the link from my Netscape Mail and call up IE (for one of its rare uses) and paste the link and then download to My Library folder. Then manually copy the --.lit file to the CF card. (with a card reader or ActiveStink Explore).
Hope this alerts anyone who uses Netscape.

I can download ebooks now :) You need to install MS Reader on your desktop in order to read ebooks on your PDA - who else could think of such a stupid idea if not Microsoft... Thanks for your help Mythos.

Thanks for these posts...I was beginning to wonder why I couldn't get the upgrade 2.2.2 working on my Axim!!!

I had the same problem. I followed the help link and it walked me through the fix. You actually have to change something on your desktop under "my computer" that has to do with scripting or something. I re-activated 5 times before I decided to follow the help links at the ms-reader site. Worked perfectly after I made this change and i am on page 427 of 4 thousand plus of one of last weeks titles. "The Gathering Storm".
