Okay, I've downloaded the newest version of MS reader for my pocket pc three times (the last two deleting the old installation before reinstalling), activate the device (what a crock, if I download and install I like what, don't want to use it?) and then try to download one of the free books. All I get is a "download error" saying I need o install the latest version or activate the device. I've finally said the H _ _ L with MS Reader and blown it off. I'll just continue buying books at 30% off from Barnes and Noble or Borders.
Are you trying to download directly to your Axim? The only way I've been able to get the free books off M$'s website is to do the download on my PC. Then I can copy the *.lit file to the PPC and read them there.
Note added in edit: BTW, this 'free books' deal has been going on all summer - three new books each week but only available for that week. I'm not sure how much longer it will be going on. If any of you are interested in 'classics,' check out the available titles at the University of Virginia.

I found when downloading the ebooks from your PC it's checking to see if you have the PC version loaded before you can download the books. I installed the PC version although I'll never us it and now I can download the books. I also agree that it's major PITA. :crooked:
srf506, I like you was very fed up with MS and not being able to activate/download/read any of the free books. I finally did as ikehiker is suggesting: I installed and activated MSReader on my PC which is where I download the books to and store my to be and already read books. I activated my PPC, my hubbies PPC and FIL's PPC with the same passport account as my PC and now we all enjoy the books I find and/or buy.
I firmly believe it was worth my time as suddenly I am enjoying ALOT more books then ever before and do not need to worry about heading to the library for returns (and paying fines).
the 3 books this week are the first 3 in a series of seven - i hope they post the other 4 - i would hate to have to buy them!
i downloaded the new version of msreader to my sd card and use handylauncher to launch the program - been doing that since this give-away started and no problems so far, not even when i upgraded to wm2003. ;)

The Summer of freebies from Microsoft is over. :-) It is awful nice to have all those ebooks. I understand it is a promotion. But how often a promotion is any good. Thank you, Microsoft.
