Making E-Book H*ll

There have been various threads about making e-books and converting documents, and I have been trying all of the advice therein but having no luck.

Since the Word plug-in does not work with W2003, I am SOL on that one. The LitSprout program wanted to turn every one of 237 footnotes into an entry in the table of contents, and they are checked as included by default. This meant I had to uncheck them all and then it didn't work even after I ran LitClean. I can't dowload the Overdrive program because the server resets each time I try when the file is 90% downloaded. I installed Palm Reader for PPC but the process for converting a document in Drop Book looks forbidding and more time-intensive than it would perhaps be worth.

I want to convert an article I've written into reader format so I can annotate it (even while I'm away) for revision. Should I just ditch Office 2003 and go back to the old version? Why does MS not have a converter for the latest version of Office? I have found the PDF reader very hard to read with other documents that I have gotten from JSTOR.

html to pml converter

i just wrote a little program to convert html to pml to create palm ebook with dropbook. you might want to try it :)

Here's what you need to do:
* load the document in ms word, or ms frontpage, or whatever editor that can save as html.
* do some editting: bold/italic/underline/whatever to the text, and apply heading style for every chapter title (or just skip this, but then you'll only get a plain long text)
* save as html
* run the program
* that's it

then the output text file can be converted to palm reader pdb using dropbook.

it still needs more works though but for now it satisfies what i need :D

cheers

Thank you! It worked! One more question--how can I make the book so that it includes links between the footnotes and their references in the text? Is that possible?

Thanks again!

Have you tried Mobipocket Publisher from mobipocket.com?

http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/default.asp

This works very well.

not at the current version.
hmm, if I implement the hyperlink then it should also support footnote,
I'll try it this weekend...
check the version number to see if it's updated ;)

Wait. I'm confused. Isn't pml a Palm reader program file? Can you use those on a Axim? Do you have to download the reader? Is it any better than MSReader?

That's a bummer about Word 2003 incompatability. Is this Microsoft's way of abandoning MSReader?

For the original poster: I can do it for you, but I'm sure that's not much help.
