E-book Library
I saw this over at PDA Corps and thought some of you guys may find it interesting. Know Better is an e-book library. You pay $20 a year for access (so they can purchase other books). When you download a book, you can choose how long you want it for up to 21 days, and it will be shown as Borrowed to other users. I am not sure how you go about turning it back in , but I thought it was an interesting idea.

How bizarre is that. Now I have to at least check out the site just to find out how you borrow an ebook for 21 days although I'm having strange visions of Mission Impossible just thinking about it....is my Axim going to self destruct in 21 days if the due date is missed?
Agreed, it is an interesting idea.....

Nope. Charlie the magickal snake seems to have disappeared.

I remember reading about a library that was thinking about doing this, and there was some kind of code in the e-book that would prevent you from opening it after a certain amount of time. Maybe it is something like that?

Expires
Per information found on the site it indicates that an expiration date is incorporated into the file when it is downloaded. I checked out the site and while there are a few books that caught my eye a large amount I either already have or will get through the BaeN site. I would rather pay teh $4.50 or so there and retain my book for infinity and by going with the monthly plan there I get more value. (at least in my opione) Still can be a great resource for the books that I dont find at other sites.

Glad the snake is gone Raynee, but you know once you find one in the house you never really can trust the house again, lol. A good cat may be of help in this case.

HEHEHE, I bet the ebook becomes unusable after 21 days and you just have to delete the file. On their servers, I'll bet after 21 days of time. The server updates itself saying that the book is turned back in.

That happened last night, and I had none of their ebooks on my Axim.

This kind of borrowing sounds similar to the PC version of Acrobat. With the full version, you can lend a friend your encrypted ebooks. Unfortunately Acrobat for pocketpc does not support DRM (digital rights management), so although acrobat has problems on the ppc, if it handled DRM, I might actually use it. I've always wanted to be able to share any ebooks that I actually paid for. Anyone know any other formats that allow sharing?

The lendable e-books are for the Mobi Reader.

Do you mean, the lendable books from the ebook library are in mobi reader format?

I guess what I was trying to say is that some ebook formats already accomodate lending in their format, so an ebook library wouldn't necessarily need to monkey with files, as was discussed earlier in the thread.

This thread had brougt up a question I had had for a while. Quite a while ago, I purchased an ebook from Amazon as a Reader file. (They only support Reader for Pocket PCs). But the problem is that now I'd like to lend this ebook to a friend. Since I got it in Reader format, I can't lend it. Are you saying that Mobi Reader does allow you to lend an ebook to a friend? I checked their website and can't find anything about it.

Since I bought that book, I have started using Fictionwise, and they do support Mobi Reader. So, if it does support lending, this is good news. I love reading ebooks on my Axim. I have two small kids, and with this, I can help them go to sleep at night, and still read with the lights off. On the other hand, I'm part of a family culture where we pass books around when we're done with them. Other than that, ebooks are perfect.

Somehow, they have the Mobi Reader e-books set up to "expire" after a certain date, which is what allows the lending. MS Reader doesn't support this, which is why the library says that there will never be .lit books available to borrow.
